SMART CARTRIDGE WAKE UP OPERATION AND DATA RETENTION
An electronic system for a surgical instrument is disclosed. The electronic system comprises a main power supply circuit configured to supply electrical power to a primary circuit. A supplementary power supply circuit configured to supply electrical power to a secondary circuit. A short circuit protection circuit coupled between the main power supply circuit and the supplementary power supply circuit. The supplementary power supply circuit is configured to isolate itself from the main power supply circuit when the supplementary power supply circuit detects a short circuit condition at the secondary circuit. The supplementary power supply circuit is configured to rejoin the main power supply circuit and supply power to the secondary circuit, when the short circuit condition is remedied.
Medical devices and methods useful for applying bolster material
Described are medical devices useful for applying a bolster material to a surgical fastening device such as a stapler, and related methods of manufacture and use. The devices include an applicator element for receipt between arms of the stapler, and a bolster material, desirably a remodelable extracellular matrix material, coupled to the applicator element. In certain embodiments, the bolster material is held by the applicator element, for example having at least a portion looped around or received through or over a portion of the applicator element. Also described are unique implantable materials including coatings of dried, reversible adhesive.
Articulatable surgical stapling instruments
A surgical instrument that includes a shaft assembly that defines a shaft axis and includes a proximal articulation joint that defines a first articulation axis that is transverse to the shaft axis and a distal articulation joint that defines a second articulation axis that is transverse to the shaft axis and the first articulation axis. The instrument further includes an anvil that is non-removably attached to the shaft assembly and a channel that is removably attachable to the shaft assembly and configured to operably support a surgical staple cartridge.
BIOABSORBABLE STAPLE COMPRISING MECHANISMS FOR SLOWING THE ABSORPTION OF THE STAPLE
A surgical staple comprising a substrate and one or more coatings which slows the bioabsorption of the substrate. The coating can be selected so as to affect the environment surrounding the staple once the staple is implanted in the patient. The effect on the environment can cause the bioabsorption to occur within a desired time frame.
END EFFECTOR WITH ADJUNCT MATERIALS
An end effector for a surgical instrument is provided that has different types of features for releasably retaining at least one adjunct material. The end effector has a first jaw having a cartridge and a second jaw having an anvil. The attachment feature includes a retaining filament having, an intermediate portion, and first and second ends disposed on opposed sides of the intermediate portion and having end features configured to mate with at least one jaw of the first and second jaws. The attachment feature is arranged to retain the adjunct material such that at least a part of the intermediate portion is disposed over the adjunct material and such that the first and second ends are spaced apart.
Compressible non-fibrous adjuncts
Stapling assemblies for use with a surgical stapler are provided. In one exemplary embodiment, the stapling assembly includes a cartridge having a plurality of staples disposed therein and a non-fibrous adjunct formed of at least one fused bioabsorbable polymer and configured to be releasably retained on the cartridge. Adjunct systems for use with a surgical stapler are also provided. Surgical end effectors using the stapling assemblies are also provided. Methods for manufacturing stapling assemblies and using the same are also provided.
ANVIL BUTTRESS LOADING FOR A SURGICAL STAPLING APPARATUS
A buttress attachment assembly includes a buttress and a buttress loader. The buttress includes a buttress body and buttress wings secured to the buttress body. The buttress body defines first openings. The buttress wings define second openings. The buttress loader includes first tabs that are receivable through the first openings of the buttress body and second tabs that are receivable through the second openings defined in the buttress wings. The first and second tabs support the buttress on the buttress loader.
Layer of material for a surgical end effector
A staple cartridge comprising a tissue thickness compensator is disclosed. The tissue thickness compensator comprises an external layer and tubular elements. The tubular elements are interconnected and positioned within the external layer. The tubular elements comprise apertures defined therein and the tubular elements are configured to collapse as pressure is applied to the tissue thickness compensator by tissue during the firing motion. The apertures enable fluids from the tissue to permeate the tissue thickness compensator.
Surgical buttress loading units
A surgical buttress loading assembly includes a surgical buttress applicator, an anvil buttress, and a cartridge buttress. The surgical buttress applicator includes an anvil buttress loading unit defining a buttress cavity and a strap cavity therein, and a cartridge buttress loading unit defining a buttress cavity and a strap cavity therein. The anvil buttress includes a tubular body disposed within the buttress cavity of the anvil buttress loading unit and a strap extending from the tubular body and positioned within the strap cavity of the anvil buttress loading unit. The cartridge buttress includes a tubular body disposed within the buttress cavity of the cartridge buttress loading unit and a strap extending from the tubular body and positioned within the strap cavity of the cartridge buttress loading unit.
SURGICAL STAPLING INSTRUMENT COMPRISING A RETRACTION SYSTEM
A surgical instrument comprising a firing drive and a bailout retraction system is disclosed.
