An arthroscopic drill for insertion into a human joint of a human body comprising an elongate body extending between a proximal end which, during use, remains external to the human body and a distal end which, when in an operative configuration, is positioned in the human joint adjacent to a target structure within the human body (e.g. preferably a joint surface); a drill bit having a proximal portion adjacent the distal end of the elongated body, the drill bit having a distal portion extending to the target structure; and an introducer sheath having a lumen with an inner diameter of at least 2 mm and a bending stiffness of approximately 0.08 Nm.sup.2, wherein the operative configuration, the elongate body extends through the introducer sheath.

The surgical cutting tool further includes a flexible driveshaft including an inner tube rotatably disposed in the lumen and extending in a longitudinal direction. The driveshaft may include at least two torsion sections spaced from one another longitudinally along the inner tube. The torsion sections each have at least one channel extending through the inner tube. The driveshaft further includes a bearing section disposed longitudinally between the torsion sections. The channels are configured to collapse under rotational load in response to transmission of torque as the driveshaft rotates such that the torsion sections are spaced apart from the inner surface of the outer tube to a greater extent than the bearing section for reducing friction between the inner tube and the outer tube.

The drill assembly including a housing having an actuation mechanism and a cannulated shaft connected to the actuation mechanism. The drill assembly also includes a rigid rod extending through the cannulated shaft. Engaging the actuation mechanism moves the cannulated shaft along the rigid rod. The drill assembly additionally includes a distal tip connected to the cannulated shaft and the rigid rod. Proximal movement of the cannulated shaft along the rigid rod causes the distal tip to rotate from a first configuration to a second configuration. In the second configuration, the distal tip extends at an angle relative to the cannulated shaft.

Anterior ankle approach system and method

A method of ankle replacement includes forming an anterior cut in a bone and forming a stem hole in a distal end of the bone. The stem hole is formed using a plurality of broaches positioned against the distal end of the bone through the anterior cut. A first portion and a second portion of a stem implant are inserted into the stem hole through the anterior cut in the bone. The first portion is coupled to the second portion using a coupling device inserted through the anterior cut in the bone. The stem implant is impacted into the stem hole using an offset impactor.
