Electromagnetic intramedullary nail screw positioning system

An electromagnetic intramedullary nail screw positioning system is used to assist an orthopaedic surgeon to correctly aligned a screw drill guide with a screw receiving aperture in an intramedullary nail during surgery. However due to the large number of different types of intramedullary nail, the system must be calibrated during each surgery. An improved calibration system is described that no longer requires the surgeon to perform the calibration during the surgery in order to save time and improve robustness. The system is periodically calibrated and a memory stores offset information for a range of nails types relative to a reference nail. During surgery, the surgeon enters a nail identifier, and the system looks up the associated offset and applies this offset to the measured signals to guide alignment of the screw drill guide with the screw receiving aperture.

Intramedullary nails, systems, and methods. The intramedullary nail may include a generally elongate body extending from a first, distal end to a second, proximal end. The distal end may include one or more openings configured to receive one or more bone anchors that extend transversely through the distal end of the intramedullary nail, and thereby configured to secure the distal end of the nail. The proximal end may also include one or more openings configured to receive one or more bone anchors that extend transversely through the proximal end of the intramedullary nail, and thereby configured to secure the proximal end of the nail.

The invention relates to a device for holding and releasing an object, comprising a main body comprising a housing to at least partially accommodate said object and an opening to enable at least a portion of the object to be removed, a lid that can be moved from a closed position preventing access to said opening and an open position enabling access to said opening, and a stop mechanism designed such that it can be moved to different positions relative to the main body towards the opening of said main body, but blocked in the other direction, to enable the stop mechanism to be brought into contact with or close to the object while preventing any recoil of the stop mechanism. The invention also relates to a corresponding production method and release methods.

SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR TARGETING A FEATURE ON A SURGICAL DEVICE

A system and method for targeting a feature on a surgical device, includes a shape sensing element coupled to a surgical device. A guide system having a moveable guide aperture is coupled to the surgical device in communication with the shape sensing element. An interrogator is operable to poll the shape sensing element for information related to the deflection of the targeted feature coupled in communication with a portion of the shape sensing element. A data processor is operable to communicate with the interrogator and provide adjustment information to the user related to the change in shape of the shape sensing element, which is related to a translation of the guide aperture with respect to the first device end such that the guide axis is aligned with the target axis. The shape sensing element may comprise at least one optical fiber, which may comprise a set of Bragg Gratings.

Technique For Providing User Guidance In Surgical Navigation

A technique of providing user guidance for surgical navigation is provided. A method implementation of the technique includes obtaining a predetermined spatial relationship between an optical tracking pattern and a through-hole extending through an implant, obtaining image data of the optical tracking pattern acquired by an imaging unit attached to a surgical instrument, obtaining a spatial relationship between the surgical instrument and the imaging unit at a point in time when the image data have been acquired, determining a spatial relationship between the surgical instrument and the through-hole, obtaining a plurality of predefined spatial relationships between the surgical instrument and the through-hole, and triggering simultaneous display of an indication of the plurality of predefined spatial relationships and an indication of the spatial relationship between the surgical instrument and the through-hole.

SURGICAL SYSTEM FOR OSTEOSYNTHESIS OF FEMORAL FRACTURES

A surgical system for osteosynthesis of femoral fractures, individual parts of such system, and a related surgical procedure is provided. Two different osteosynthesis methods are combined: the intramedullary hip screw for hip fractures and the retrograde femoral nail for femoral shaft fractures. The system includes a new jig for the insertion of the retrograde intramedullary nail and the femoral neck screw. The surgical system makes it possible to osteosynthesize obese patients with trochanteric hip fractures in a safer and improved controlled surgery with the aim of reducing complications to this type of surgery.

ASSEMBLY FIXTURE FOR INTRAMEDULLARY NAIL

A system is provided for aligning an intramedullary nail for implantation when the intramedullary nail has an intramedullary nail body having a first end having a first interlocking profile and the intramedullary nail body has a first through hole extending therethrough about a first axis. The system comprises an alignment device adapted and configured to be separable from the intramedullary nail. The system also comprises a holding fixture comprising a channel and a projection adapted and configured to cooperatively receive the intramedullary nail in the channel such that the projection extends within the first through hole and the first axis aligns with a through hole of the alignment device when the first interlocking profile is engaged with an interlocking profile of the alignment device.

Cephalomedullary nailing system of variable angle to treat femur fractures and the utensils used to place the system

The cephalomedullary nailing system of this invention contributes to solving three main problems: reduce fractures, improve assembly biomechanics to ensure the load axis is favorable as possible for bony fragments and prevent femoral neck collapse as well as offset and limb length loss, hence avoiding the possibility of reduced abductor power. The system is based on specific screw channel geometry and the placement of an additional locking screw, allowing the nail to turn 360° and facilitating nail insertion through the screw.
