Intramedullary nail, particularly lockable intramedullary nail, and device for fixating the intramedullary nail in a hollow bone

Described is a locking intramedullary nail for insertion in the medullary cavity of hollow bones for treating bone fractures or for joint stiffening. The nail comprises an oblong shaft having at least one holder for a locking screw. In the region of an opening a roller or ball-shaped sleeve having a bore for receiving the locking screw is arranged. The sleeve which is supported in the shaft in a freely pivotable manner can be locked in a positionally stable manner in the shaft. This affords the ability to introduce the locking screws during the implantation of the intramedullary nail at an optimum angle for the respective anatomical or pathological situation of the patient and to subsequently lock it permanently at a constant angle.

An aspect of the disclosure relates to an intramedullary device configured for ankle fusion. The intramedullary device for ankle fusion includes: a housing configured to be coupled to a calcaneus bone; and a rod configured to be coupled to a tibia bone, wherein a distal end of the housing includes an external thread. The rod is configured for telescopic movement relative to the housing, and to retract relative to the housing to cause ankle fusion. After fusion is achieved, the rod can be distracted to correct a limb length discrepancy.

Intramedullary fracture fixation devices and methods

An intramedullary bone fixation device is provided with an elongate body having a longitudinal axis and an actuator to deploy at least one gripper to engage an inner surface of the intramedullary space to anchor the fixation device to the bone. Methods of repairing a fracture of a bone are also disclosed. One such method comprises inserting a fixation device into an intramedullary space of the bone to place at least a portion of the fixation device on one side of the fracture, providing rigidity across the fracture, and operating an actuator to deploy at least one gripper to engage an inner surface of the intramedullary space to anchor the fixation device to the bone. Various configurations allow a segmented device body to lock in the intramedullary space before and/or after fixation of the bone.
