An ultrasonic tool system with a console and a tip that has a distal end that when vibrated vibrates both longitudinally and torsionally. The console applies a drive signal to the drivers that vibrate the tip that is at a longitudinal mechanical cancellation frequency. Consequently, when the tip is vibrated, at the distal end the longitudinal component of a first resonant mode of the tip cancel out the longitudinal component of the second resonant move of the tip so the distal end of the tip engages in vibrations that substantially torsional and only minimally longitudinal.

Ultrasonic surgical instruments having offset blades

Ultrasonic surgical instruments having angularly and/or linearly off-set blades are described. The angularly and/or linearly off-set blades may facilitate increased surgical site access, visibility, and manipulability.

FEATURES TO COUPLE ACOUSTIC DRIVETRAIN COMPONENTS IN ULTRASONIC SURGICAL INSTRUMENT

An ultrasonic surgical instrument includes a body, an ultrasonic transducer rotatably supported within the body and having a threaded distal end, a shaft extending from the body, a waveguide extending through the shaft and having a threaded proximal end configured to threadedly engage the threaded distal end to define a threaded coupling, and an end effector at a distal end of the shaft. An integrated torque wrench mechanism is arranged within the body and includes a first torque wrench member rotationally coupled with a proximal end of the transducer, and a second torque wrench member arranged proximally of the first torque wrench member. The torque wrench members are configured to selectively couple together and frictionally engage one another to facilitate application of a predetermined maximum torque to the threaded coupling. The torque wrench members are configured to automatically decouple upon application of the predetermined maximum torque to the threaded coupling.

Acoustic drivetrain with external collar at nodal position

An ultrasonic surgical instrument includes a body, a shaft, an ultrasonic transducer, a waveguide, and an end effector coupled to a distal end of the shaft. A rotation knob is rotatably coupled to the body and is configured to rotate the shaft, the waveguide, and the end effector together relative to the body. A torque transfer structure is positioned radially outwardly of and in direct contact with the waveguide at an acoustic node thereof. The torque transfer structure is rotationally fixed relative to the waveguide and is configured to rotationally couple the waveguide with the shaft and the rotation knob. The waveguide includes a first axial constraining feature defining a distally facing surface, and the torque transfer structure includes a second axial constraining feature defining a proximally facing surface configured to abut the distally facing surface to constrain the waveguide axially relative to the torque transfer structure and the body.

An ultrasonic tool system with a console (230) and a tip (142) that has a distal end that when vibrated vibrates both longitudinally and torsionally. The console applies a drive signal to the drivers (36) that vibrate the tip that is at a longitudinal mechanical cancelation frequency. Consequently, when the tip is vibrated, at the distal end the longitudinal component of a first resonant mode of the tip cancel out the longitudinal component of the second resonant move of the tip so the distal end of the tip engages in vibrations that substantially torsional and only minimally longitudinal.

Surgical device employing a cantilevered beam dissector

A surgical instrument for treating body tissues through narrow body passages employs an elongated cantilevered beam having a proximal end supported in a rigid block and a narrower distal end extendable through the narrow passages. One or more piezoelectric actuators are fixed to the beam surface and energized from an AC source provided by an electrical excitation system through electrodes interspersed with the piezoelectric actuators to produce oscillatory motion of the beam distal end in multiple modes of movement.
