Hybrid laser cutter

A tool has a handle and an elongate shaft that extends distally from the handle. A distal portion of the shaft is inserted into a subject during a surgical procedure. An optical fiber delivers laser energy to a tip at the distal portion of the shaft. The tip includes a mechanical cutting mechanism including a moving part that absorbs the laser energy, thermally conducts the absorbed energy to tissue that is disposed between the moving part and another part, and moves with respect to the other part in order to cut tissue that is disposed between the parts using a mechanical force that is lower than a mechanical force that would be required to cut the tissue in the absence of the laser energy. Other embodiments are also described.

CABLE FOR CONVEYING RADIOFREQUENCY AND/OR MICROWAVE FREQUENCY ENERGY TO AN ELECTROSURGICAL INSTRUMENT

Embodiments of the invention provide a hollow cable for transmitting radiofrequency and/or microwave frequency energy to an electrosurgical instrument, wherein the hollow cable is provided with electrical connectors for forming a bipolar electrical connection with an electrosurgical instrument that fits within, e.g. slides relative to, the hollow cable. The connectors can be conductive protrusions extending in an axial direction on opposite sides of the cable. The protrusions can be tabs, fins, rods, pins, or wires. The protrusions can be strips which engage corresponding terminals on the instrument. The transmission line structure of the invention can have a greater diameter than conventional coaxial cables, which can minimize loss whilst still providing access for control wires and/or fluid to reach a surgical instrument. The cable can be used with multiple instruments.

IMPLANTABLE DEVICE FOR OPTICALLY STIMULATING THE BRAIN COMPRISING A MULTI-CHANNEL CATHETER

An implantable device for optically stimulating a brain of a human being or animal, including: a multi-channel biocompatible catheter including a plurality of channels extending substantially parallel to each other relative to a longitudinal axis of the multi-channel catheter; a light guide, extending into one channel, for optically stimulating the brain, the multi-channel catheter acting as a sheath totally enveloping the light guide; a functional element, extending into another channel, to measure light injected into a surrounding medium at a distal end of the light guide and/or an element acting on the shape of the multi-channel catheter.

Graphical user interface for association with an electrode structure deployed in contact with a tissue region

Systems and methods deploy an electrode structure in contact with the tissue region. The electrode structure carries a sensor at a known location on the electrode structure to monitor an operating condition. The systems and methods provide an interface, which generate an idealized image of the electrode structure and an indicator image to represent the monitored operating condition in a spatial position on the idealized image corresponding to the location of the sensor on the electrode structure. The interface displays a view image comprising the idealized image and indicator image. The systems and methods cause the electrode structure to apply energy to heat the tissue region while the view image is displayed on the display screen.

Bipolar sphincterotome

A bipolar sphincterotome may include an elongate tubular member, a cutting wire, and a return path. The return path may include a conductive ink portion disposed on an outer surface at a distal portion of the tubular member. The return path may also include a return wire disposed within the tubular member that is electrically coupled to the conductive ink portion. In some example embodiments, the return wire may be disposed within a lumen configured to have two or more functions, one of which being to house the return wire. Additionally, in some example embodiments, the conductive ink portion may be circumferentially disposed on the outer surface to provide visual access to a wire guide lumen. Also, for some example embodiments, the bipolar sphincterotome may include two electrically isolated return paths.

Devices and systems for the selective positioning of an intravascular neuromodulation device are disclosed herein. Such systems can include, for example, an elongated shaft and a therapeutic assembly carried by a distal portion of the elongated shaft. The therapeutic assembly is configured for delivery within a blood vessel. The therapeutic assembly can include a pre-formed shape and can be transformable between a substantially straight delivery configuration; and a treatment configuration having the pre-formed helical shape to position the therapeutic assembly in stable contact with a wall of the body vessel. The therapeutic assembly can also include a mechanical decoupler operably connected to the therapeutic assembly that is configured to absorb at least a portion of a force exerted on the therapeutic assembly by the shaft so that the therapeutic assembly maintains a generally stationary position relative to the target site.

Forceps actuation systems

Forceps including a housing, a first body, a second body and a drive shaft. The first body has a passageway extending therethrough. The drive shaft extending through the passageway and connected to the first body such that the first body and the drive shaft are slidable with respect to the housing to drive jaws located at a distal portion of the drive shaft between an open position and a closed position. The second body having a second passageway. The drive shaft extending through the second passageway such that the second body is guided by the drive shaft and is slidable relative to the first body and the drive shaft to displace a blade shaft between a retracted position and an extended position.

A cryoprobe for cryotherapy, includes a working and a drain tube, welded together. The working tube has a first end, a distal end, an internal surface, an external surface, an inner diameter, and an outer diameter. The drain tube is placed concentrically in the working tube, and has an internal surface, an external surface, an inner diameter, an outer diameter, a first end connected to a first pressure supply, and a perforated second end which is proximate to the distal end of the working tube. The drain tube is welded to the working tube between the internal surface of the working tube and the external surface of the drain tube to manufacture a throttle perforation, in a manner which allows fluid to pass along the outer surface of the drain tube, expand at the distal end of the working tube, and drain through the drain tube.
