Cranial surgical drape
A drape for use in cranial surgical procedures including a sterile sheet and a plurality of fluid-collection pouches surrounding a cranial region fenestration. The drape further includes a thoracic region fenestration for concurrent or directly subsequent thoracic surgical procedures. Advantageously, the drape allows for a superior aseptic surgical field and superior drainage facilitated by a multi-pouch configuration.
Wireless communication in a robotic surgical system
A telesurgical manipulator comprises an insertion axis mechanism including a base link and a carriage link movable relative to the base link. The carriage link receives a surgical instrument for movement relative to the base link. The base and carriage links are configured for telescoping motion with an extended configuration in which a portion of the carriage link extends beyond the base link. The manipulator also includes an instrument interface included in the carriage link coupled to the surgical instrument via a sterile adaptor that secures a sterile drape to the instrument interface. The sterile drape permits communication between the surgical instrument and the carriage link while maintaining a sterile barrier. The manipulator comprises a communication device on the insertion axis mechanism that wireles sly communicates with the surgical instrument with the sterile drape disposed therebetween and that wirelessly provides power to the surgical instrument with the sterile drape disposed therebetween.
CABLE TENSIONING IN A ROBOTIC SURGICAL SYSTEM
A cable tensioning system of a surgical system comprises a base, an arm, and a moveable idler pulley rotatably coupled to a first end of the arm and positioned between a first pulley system and a second pulley system. A closed loop cable drive extends between the first pulley system and the second pulley system, and the closed loop cable drive passes over the moveable idler pulley. The cable tensioning system also comprises a translation mechanism slidably coupling a second end of the arm to the base. The translation mechanism is configured to move the arm relative to the base along a linear path between a first position and a second position such that the moveable idler pulley is moved away from at least one of the first pulley system or the second pulley system to control a tension in the closed loop cable drive.
Shape-Sensing Systems and Methods for Medical Devices
Shape-sensing systems and methods for catheters. The shape-sensing system can include a catheter, an optical interrogator, a console, and a display screen. The catheter can include an integrated optical-fiber stylet having fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors along at least a distal-end portion thereof. The optical interrogator can be configured to send input optical signals into the optical-fiber stylet and receive FBG sensor-reflected optical signals therefrom. The console can be configured to convert the reflected optical signals into plottable data for displaying plots thereof on the display screen. The plots can include a plot of curvature vs. time for each FBG sensor of a selection of the FBG sensors in the distal-end portion of the optical-fiber stylet for identifying a distinctive change in strain of the optical-fiber stylet as a tip of the catheter is advanced into a superior vena cava of a patient.
Catheter placement assist device and method of use
A single-use, sterile, disposable catheter placement assist device to aid in the sterile placement of transurethral urinary catheters in female patients, and a method for catheter placement using the device. The catheter placement assist device includes a labia separator with flared wings having a curved profile. The wings meet at a valley. The catheter placement assist device also includes a posterior shield that covers the perineal tissues including the anus to prevent contamination of the sterile catheter with bacteria and may further include a spout that may be shallowly inserted into the vagina to position the catheter device to optimize labial separation, retraction of the posterior vaginal wall, perineal shielding, and visualization of the urethral meatus. The additional features of a light, a handle, a catheter tip holder, a swab storage location, and a stackable configuration may further be included with the catheter placement assist device.
Cable tensioning in a robotic surgical system
A termination assembly of a cabling system in a robotic surgical manipulator comprises a block including first and second cable pathways sized for receipt of a first cable. The first cable pathway includes a first retainer sized to prevent passage of a first fitting coupled to the first cable. The termination assembly also includes a first support coupled to the block and around which the first cable is routed.
Connection systems and methods for establishing optical and electrical connections through a drape
Connection systems and methods for establishing optical and electrical connections through a drape are disclosed. A connection system can include a plug and a receptacle, the plug being configured to insert into the receptacle with the drape therebetween. The plug can include an optical terminal extending from a plug housing and an electrical terminal extending from the plug housing. The electrical terminal can be configured as a piercing element for piercing the drape. The receptacle can include an optical receiver within a receptacle housing and an electrical receiver within the receptacle housing. The optical receiver can be configured to form the optical connection with the optical terminal, and the electrical receiver can be configured to form the electrical connection with the electrical terminal when the plug is inserted into the receptacle with the drape therebetween.
Surgical device having multiple receptacles
A surgical device comprising a first receptacle having a first mouth and a second receptacle having a second mouth, wherein the first mouth is in open communication with the second mouth via a joint joining the first receptacle with the second receptacle, and wherein the first mouth and second mouth open in a common direction. The surgical device can be used to effectively collect fluid during surgery in a first receptacle while simultaneously and independently retaining equipment and other medical supplies, such as tubes, wires, and/or tools, in a second receptacle. A drape sheet for covering at least a portion of a patient, the drape sheet optionally having a fenestration therein, with the surgical device being attached to the drape sheet.
Catheter dressing system
A catheter dressing system includes a catheter that may be inserted into a patient when the patient is undergoing a surgical procedure. A dressing is provided and the dressing is selectively adhered to the patient. The dressing covers the catheter thereby inhibiting the catheter from being contaminated and the dressing gas a tear-away portion. A surgical drape is positioned on the patient when the patient is undergoing the surgical procedure. The surgical drape adhesively engages the tear-away portion of the dressing. The tear away portion is removed from the dressing when the surgical drape is removed from the patient such that the dressing remains on the catheter.
