Smart cartridge wake up operation and data retention

An electronic system for a surgical instrument is disclosed. The electronic system comprises a main power supply circuit configured to supply electrical power to a primary circuit. A supplementary power supply circuit configured to supply electrical power to a secondary circuit. A short circuit protection circuit coupled between the main power supply circuit and the supplementary power supply circuit. The supplementary power supply circuit is configured to isolate itself from the main power supply circuit when the supplementary power supply circuit detects a short circuit condition at the secondary circuit. The supplementary power supply circuit is configured to rejoin the main power supply circuit and supply power to the secondary circuit, when the short circuit condition is remedied.

Systems, apparatus and methods for continuously tracking medical items throughout a procedure

Systems, methods and apparatus are disclosed for improving medical procedures and medical procedure management, and, more particularly, for tracking medical instruments throughout a procedure and assisting medical personnel throughout the procedure or at least at the conclusion of the procedure. In one form, an apparatus for tracking medical instruments throughout a procedure is disclosed having a single camera for tracking movement and/or detecting position of a plurality of medical instruments during a medical procedure as at least one of the plurality of medical instruments is moved between multiple zones at least including a first prep zone and a second procedure zone. The apparatus having a controller connected to and collecting images from the camera, and a display in electrical communication with the controller and/or the camera for displaying medical instrument data pertaining to the movement and/or position of the plurality of medical instruments.

SURGICAL SYSTEM COMMUNICATION PATHWAYS

A surgical system comprising a surgical hub, a surgical instrument, a generator configured to energize an end effector; and a smoke evacuation system configured to remove smoke from a surgical site is disclosed. The surgical instrument comprises the end effector. A control command is passed directly from the surgical hub to the surgical instrument. The surgical instrument is configured to pass the control command received from the surgical hub to the generator and the smoke evacuation system in a daisy-chain manner.

CONTROL PROGRAM ADAPTATION BASED ON DEVICE STATUS AND USER INPUT

A surgical system comprising a surgical instrument, a generator configured to supply power to an end effector, and a processor configured to run a control program to operate the surgical system is disclosed. The surgical instrument comprises the end effector which includes a first jaw and a second jaw. At least one of the first jaw and the second jaw is moved with respect to one another between an open position and a closed position. Tissue is configured to be positioned between the first jaw and the second jaw. The processor is configured to detect a first parameter of the surgical system, detect at least one user input, and modify the control program in response to the detected first parameter and the at least one user input.

CONTROL PROGRAM FOR MODULAR COMBINATION ENERGY DEVICE

A surgical instrument comprising a housing, a shaft assembly, a processor, and a memory is disclosed. The shaft assembly is replaceably connected to the housing. The shaft assembly comprises an end effector. The memory is configured to store program instructions which, when executed from the memory cause the processor to send an electrical interrogation signal to the attached shaft assembly, receive a response signal from the attached shaft assembly, cause a default function to be performed when a response signal is not received by the attached shaft assembly, determine an identifying characteristic of the attached shaft assembly as a result of the performance of the default function, and modify a control program based on the identifying characteristic of the attached shaft assembly.

SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR SENSING PRESENCE OF MEDICAL TOOLS

A system including a tool recognition assembly comprising a first target reader with a first detection zone. The system also includes a tool configured to be installed in the tool recognition assembly, wherein the first reader detects a first reading indicating a presence or absence of the first target in the first detection zone during an installation of the tool in the tool recognition assembly, the detected first reading being at least a part of a detected insertion signature, and provides the detected insertion signature to initiate a comparison of the detected insertion signature to one or more model signatures.
