SURGICAL METHODS USING FIDUCIAL IDENTIFICATION AND TRACKING

In general, devices, systems, and methods for fiducial identification and tracking are provided.

Ultrasound localization system with advanced biopsy site markers

Disclosed biopsy markers are adapted to serve as localization markers during a surgical procedure. Adaptation includes incorporation of materials detectable under ultrasound during surgery, as well as features for co-registration with image guidance or other real-time imaging technologies during surgery. Such biopsy markers, when used as localization markers, improve patient comfort and reduce challenges in surgical coordination and surgery time. Additional disclosed biopsy markers are adapted to serve as monitoring and/or detection apparatuses. Localization of an implanted marker may be done with ultrasound technology. Ultrasound image data is analyzed to identify the implanted marker. A distance to the marker or a lesion may be determined and displayed. The determined distance may be a distance between the ultrasound probe and the marker or lesion, a distance between the marker or lesion and an incision instrument, and/or a distance between the ultrasound probe and the incision instrument.

Minimally invasive surgical apparatus and methods

Apparatus and methods are described for performing percutaneous catheter-based interventional surgery. The apparatus comprises first and second devices that are located in adjacent body cavities, such as adjacent blood vessels, the first device being capable of transmitting a directional signal that can be received by the second device. The direction of the signal is correlated with the facility to direct therapy, such that improved accuracy in therapy placement is thereby achieved. Methods for treating patients utilising the means and apparatus are also provided.

Provided herein are systems and methods comprising localization agents. For example, provided herein are systems and methods for the placement of localization devices within biological systems and the detection of such localization devices for targeted surgeries or other medical procedures. For example, provided herein are systems comprising one or more miniature detectable devices that are placed into a target location and activated by remote introduction of a magnetic field.

Ultrasound imaging of biomarker sensitive hydrogels

Systems and methods for accurately measuring changes in biomarker sensitive hydrogel volume and shape due to exposure to various biomarkers include a system for identifying one or more dimensional changes in a biomarker sensitive hydrogel positioned within an in vivo environment. The system includes a biomarker sensitive hydrogel positioned within an in vivo environment and configured to dimensionally change in response to interaction with predefined biomarkers. The system additionally includes an ultrasound transducer for locating and identifying one or more characteristics of the biomarker sensitive hydrogel and a computer system in electrical communication with the ultrasound transducer. The computer system is configured to receive characteristics of the biomarker sensitive hydrogel from the ultrasound transducer and determine dimensional changes of the biomarker sensitive hydrogel based on the received characteristics.

According to some embodiments, systems and methods of ultrasonic detection of implantable medical device distraction are provided. The system includes a first elongate member and a second elongate member. The first elongate member has a first end that is configured to be attached to a first location on the skeletal system of a subject, a second end, and at least one landmark identifiable using ultrasound. The second elongate member has a first end that is movably coupled to the second end of the first elongate member, a second end configured to be attached to a second location on the skeletal system, and at least one landmark identifiable using ultrasound. Movement of the first elongate member in relation to the second elongate member causes a corresponding movement of the at least one first landmark in relation to the at least one second landmark which can be detected using ultrasound.

User interface for a system used to determine tissue or artifact characteristics

A surgical system includes a shaft having a distal end and a proximal end, the proximal end including a grip, a sensor attached to the distal end of the shaft, at least one visual indicator disposed at the distal end of the shaft, and a controller coupled to the sensor and the at least one visual indicator, the controller actuating the at least one visual indicator according to a signal received from the sensor.

An ultrasound device is provided for imaging an anatomical region. The ultrasound device includes an ultrasound probe (288). The ultrasound device further includes a medical instrument (202) having an ultrasound transducer (279) mounted thereto. The ultrasound device also includes a hardware processor (214) configured to render a Region Of Interest (ROI) relative to a distal end of the medical instrument on an ultrasound image displayed on a display device, and selectively perform a dynamic ROI refinement as the medical instrument is moved through the anatomical region to increase a location precision of the distal end of the medical instrument in the ultrasound image. The dynamic ROI refinement is generated in accordance with physical characteristics of the medical instrument and a recorded path of movement of the medical instrument through the anatomical region determined based on acoustic pulses transmitted between the ultrasound probe (288) and the ultrasound transducer (279).
