A bone fusing implant device includes an elongated body extending along a longitudinal direction and having a star-shaped cross-section. The elongated body includes a central through-opening extending through the elongated body's center along the longitudinal direction and an outer surface with alternating elongated ridges and slit openings extending along the longitudinal direction. The outer surface is coated with bone growth enhancing additives.

A method for forming and abrading an implant void in a sacroiliac joint (“SI Joint”) without the use of a rotary cutting instrument. The method incorporates a multimodal abrading device having abrading surfaces on opposing sides and an open tip comprising a cutting edge. The method includes the step of using the abrading head to cut bone tissue from the SI Joint at an insertion point while simultaneously using the abrading surfaces to decorticate the cortical bone at the insertion point.

An allograft implant for fusing a sacroiliac joint (“SI Joint”), the allograft implant having a body consisting of allograft bone, the body comprising two opposing faces. A graft window is disposed between the two opposing faces, the graft window providing passage through the body between the two opposing faces. The graft window has a cross-sectional area that is about 35% to about 40% of a first cross-sectional area of the body, and about 60% of an area of each opposing face that makes contact with the sacrum or the ilium of the SI Joint.

Methods and apparatuses for performing an orthopedic procedure in the sacroiliac region are disclosed. In one form, an aperture is formed that at least partially extends through at least one of an ilium and a sacrum. An undercutting system is inserted into the aperture. The undercutting system includes an insertion apparatus, a probe assembly and a cutting assembly. The probe assembly is moved with respect to the insertion apparatus from a retracted position to an extended position. The probe assembly is manipulated within a joint between the ilium and the sacrum while the probe assembly is in the extended position. The cutting assembly is moved with respect to the insertion apparatus from a retracted position to an extended position. The cutting assembly is manipulated within the joint between the ilium and the sacrum while the cutting assembly is in the extended position to form a fusion region.

A method of surgically preparing a sacroiliac joint comprising: a) approaching a sacroiliac joint space with a joint preparation tool comprising a cutting element including an exterior having an asymmetric cutting band such that the first side includes a first surface having a first texture and the second side includes a second surface having a second texture, the first and second textures being different such that the first texture is substantially smoother than the second texture; and b) delivering at least a portion of the cutting element non-transversely into the sacroiliac joint space for decortication, the cutting element being oriented in the sacroiliac joint space such that the first surface opposes the generally softer sacrum and the second surface opposes the generally harder ilium in order to more aggressively prepare the surface of the ilium while not over-preparing the sacrum to provide a robust biologic environment for intra-articular fusion.

A sacroiliac joint implant includes an implant structure formed from an elongated base member, an elongated first side member, and an elongated second side member, with an internal support structure extending in an implant plane from the base member to each of the first side member and the second side member. Three or more fusion passages are defined in an area between the base member, first side member, and second side member. Each fusion passage defines a respective open area through the implant to facilitate bone growth across the sacroiliac joint when the implant is properly implanted in the joint.
