A method is provided for surface-selective coating of a surface of an individual physical document, in particular a card-like document, with a liquid coating. The method includes: receiving or generating an actual image information by image sensors, which represents an actual image of the surface; and comparing the actual image information with reference image information, which represents a reference image of a reference surface corresponding to the surface, to determine, based on possible deviations between the actual image and the reference image, any deformation of the surface compared to the reference surface and to generate deformation information representing said deformation or alternatively the absence thereof. A coating device is then controlled based on coating information determined based on the deformation information and on geometry information that defines a target shape of a partial surface of the surface to be provided with the liquid coating.

According to one aspect, the subject matter described herein includes a method for extracting text from unstructured documents. The method includes receiving a page of an unstructured document; extracting, from the page, a glyph identifier and a glyph position for each glyph on the page; and generating an adjacency graph based on the glyph positions for each glyph on the page, each node in the graph corresponding to a glyph and comprising glyph information that includes at least the glyph identifier and the glyph position for the respective glyph. The method further includes processing the adjacency graph by a machine learning model to classify edges and nodes in the adjacency graph, then grouping the glyphs according to their edge and node classifications to produce text output.

A method of identifying characters in images extracts features of a detection image including characters. Enhancement processing is performed on the detection image according to the features to obtain an enhanced image. Closed edges of the characters are detected in the enhanced image. First rectangular outlines of the characters are determined according to the closed edges. The first rectangular outlines are corrected to obtain second rectangular outlines. The characters are cropped from the detection image according to the second rectangular outlines. The method identifies characters in images accurately and rapidly.

The at least one visual text region may include a plurality of text characters and determining the at least one visual text region is based on analysis of one of lines and curves associated with each of the plurality of text characters, blob associated with the plurality of text characters along an axis, distribution of the plurality of text characters along a major axis, and a common attribute associated with the plurality of text characters. The method may further include segmenting the plurality of text characters from a background, and inpainting each of the plurality of text characters with a predefined color.
