Systems and methods are provided for controlling access to a building or other restricted physical spaces using at least a facial recognition module, an access control panel and electronically lockable doors or other means of controlling access. The facial recognition module comprises visible light and IR detection. The facial recognition module initially uses visible light to detect a person in the vicinity of an access control location, defines a region of interest in at least a captured image related to the location of the person's face, tracks the movement of the face and adjusts the region of interest, and performs facial recognition by prioritizing analysis of the defined region of interest.

Each of the user-customizable key, a user-customizable key receiver, and a key receiver receptacle includes a physical unclonable function (PUF) circuit configured to provide a PUF response in response to receiving a challenge signal. The PUF circuits of the user-customizable key and a user-customizable key receiver include personalization fuses that allow a user to further personalize or change the PUF response produced by the corresponding PUF circuits. The key receiver receptacle also includes anti-theft fuses, which are activated if the user-customizable key receiver is removed from the key receiver receptacle. In use, a protected system may utilize the PUF responses from the each of the PUF circuits to authenticate the user-customizable locking assembly.

It is presented a portable access control communication device comprising: a housing for protecting a key device, the access control communication device; a socket arranged to hold a blade of a key device, the socket comprising a connector for communication with the key device; a cellular radio communication module; and a controller. The controller is arranged to communicate, using the cellular radio communication module, with an access control device over a cellular communication network when a key device is provided in the socket such that there is electric contact between the key device and the socket.
