Configurable orthosis and method of definitive orthotic design, fabrication and validation

Configurable orthoses having a high degree of independent adjustability of various parameters are provided. In the example of a rehabilitation-evaluation ankle-foot orthosis (REAFO), these parameters may include calf band anteroposterior, height, width, sagittal tilt, coronal tilt, and mediolateral displacement adjustments; mediolateral displacement adjustments of a supramalleolar support; heel width/stirrup separation adjustment; and sagittal active joint resistance and neutral angle adjustments. Calf band mediolateral displacement adjustment may be provided by a lockable four-bar pivoting frame linkage of the REAFO. In one aspect, the configurable orthosis is used in conjunction with a plastically deformable precursor member to facilitate the design and manufacture of a definitive orthosis customized for a particular patient. In another aspect, the orthosis communicatively transmits limb shape data to either a positive shape receiver apparatus or a CAD/CAM apparatus, to facilitate design and manufacture of a definitive orthosis.

A method for controlling a change of resistance in an artificial joint of an orthosis, an exoskeleton or prosthesis of a lower extremity. The artificial joint has an upper part and a lower part which are secured on each other so as to be pivotable about a pivot axis, a damper unit is secured between the upper part and the lower part in order to provide a resistance to flexion or extension of the artificial joint, and the damper unit is assigned an adjusting mechanism via which the resistance is changed when a sensor signal of a control unit assigned to the adjusting mechanism activates the adjusting mechanism. The resistance is changed as a function of the position and/or length of the measured or calculated leg tendon and/or the time derivatives thereof.

Orthopedic device including protruding members

Orthopedic devices may include rigid members for coupling to portions of a limb that includes a joint, and a cable that couples to the rigid members and extends up to a powered element. Trunk supporting exoskeleton and method of use

An exoskeleton includes two torque generators, two thigh links, and a supporting trunk rotatably coupled to the thigh links. When a wearer bends forward in the sagittal plane such that the supporting trunk extends beyond a predetermined angle A with respect to vertical, at least one of the torque generators imposes a resisting torque between the supporting trunk and a corresponding thigh link, thus imposing a force onto a wearer's trunk and thighs to aid in supporting the wearer in a bent position. The exoskeleton may include an active or passive means for actuating the generators. When the supporting trunk does not extend beyond the predetermined angle A, the torque generators do not impose resisting torques between the supporting trunk and the thigh links during the entire range of motion of the thigh links, thus enabling a wearer to walk, run and sit without constraint while in an upright position.

Removeable Cast Walker With Ankle Lock and Use-Detection and Reporting Means

A range of motion (ROM) removeable cast walker (RCW) has an ankle hinge that may be locked and unlocked by the user. A first sensor is responsive to the locked/unlocked condition of the RCW. A second sensor is responsive to the presence of a limb within the RCW. A third sensor is responsive to weight borne by the RCW. If the ankle hinge is unlocked, the ROM RCW is being worn and weight is being borne, a warning is provided to the patient to remind the patient to lock the ankle hinge to conform to the therapeutic regimen. A radio transmitter may report the state of the ROM RCW to a smart phone and to a remote storage facility for use by a physician.

An assistance apparatus includes a first and second wires coupling an upper-body belt and a left knee belt to each other on or above a front and back parts of a body of a user, respectively, a third and fourth wires coupling the upper-body belt and a right knee belt to each other on or above the front and back parts, respectively, a motor, a first sensor that detects at least tensions of the first and third wires, and a control circuit. The control circuit controls the motor to generate, when the first wire is broken, in the second wire, a tension less than a tension of the second wire during no break in the first wire, and to generate, when the third wire is broken, in the fourth wire, a tension less than a tension of the fourth wire during no break in the third wire.
