Tactile and visual display with paired and active stylus with means and methods
20220139257 · 2022-05-05 ·

An active, specialized stylus and sharp color graphics may be combined with a tactile display in order to increase accessibility to the blind and visually impaired. A tactile display may consist of an array of pins that may be raised to varying heights to represent contours and outlines of images that are recognizable when touched. A specialized stylus may allow the user to instantly create, touch and save tactile drawings or alter with multi-sensory feedback.

A tactile and visual display may consist of an array of pins, with circular or squared-off tops. Physical attributes may be given to individual pins, the screen itself (LED), or a LCD WXGA or other type of projector may be incorporated so that enhanced visual imaging is combined with tactile graphics to give those with different levels of visual impairment a multisensory feedback when experiencing images or drawings. Also this technology may be used with autistic students and those with learning disabilities, as well as serve as a means of entertainment.

Assistive device for non-visually discerning a three-dimensional (3D) real-world area surrounding a user
11726571 · 2023-08-15 ·

An assistive device and method for non-visually discerning a three dimensional (3D) real-world area surrounding a user, comprises a haptic feedback interface. The assistive device receives input to select a mode in the assistive device and based on the selected mode, determines each of a plurality of objects within a first proximity range of the assistive device as a relevant object or a non-relevant object to obtain a set of relevant objects and a set of non-relevant objects. The assistive device determines a scaling factor based on the first proximity range and the selected mode, and further adjusts sizes of the set of relevant objects to map the set of relevant objects with a set of haptic elements of the haptic feedback interface. The assistive device generates touch-discernible feedback on the haptic feedback interface to enable the user to non-visually discern the 3D real-world area surrounding the user.

Ingress Protected Braille Display

Disclosed is a Braille display with protection against the ingress of contaminants. In one embodiment, contaminant protection is provided by a flexible film that is secured beneath the Braille dots of the display. This film both secures the dots and prevents contaminants from coming into contact with pin actuators within the display housing. In another embodiment, ingress protection is provided by air pressure supplied to a plenum located at the base of the dot pins.

Impact resistant modular braille display device

Disclosed is a braille display that is impact resistant and that employs a modular construction. The impact resistance is achieved, in part, by molded and resilient end caps. Each end cap includes a centrally positioned slit that functions in absorbing lateral impacts to the display. The impact resistance is further achieved by an over molded housing that is positioned about an associated USB connector. The modularity of the display is achieved by way of a subassembly that is releasably secured within the interior of a main housing. The subassembly, in turn, includes a series of cell compartments that are arranged in groups. Each group of cell compartments is controlled by an individual shift register. This allows a grouping cell compartments to be removed and replaced as needed without disturbing the remaining cell components.

Display panel, display device and method for displaying Braille information

The embodiments of the present disclosure provide a display panel, a display device, and a method for displaying Braille information. The display panel includes a plurality of scan lines, data lines, and display circuits arranged at intersections of the plurality of scan lines and the plurality of data lines. The display circuit includes a switch configured to be turned on or off according to a scan signal from the scan line, and a dot element coupled to the switch. The dot element includes a substrate, an electrode provided on the substrate, a thermosensitive layer provided on the electrode, and a dot key arranged on the thermosensitive layer. The electrode is coupled to the switch, and configured to be applied with a data signal from the data line when the switch is turned on. The thermosensitive layer is configured to be heated by the electrode to protrude the dot.

SHAPE-VARIABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICE AND OPERATION METHOD OF THE SAME

The present invention relates to a shape-variable electronic device and an operation method of the same and, more specifically, the shape-variable electronic device includes: a substrate having a cell region; a light source unit on the cell region; and a flexible layer vertically spaced apart from the light source unit. The flexible layer includes an actuator part that changes a shape of the flexible layer, and the actuator part includes: a photo-thermal response part that receives light emitted from the light source unit and generates thermal energy; a deformation part which receives the thermal energy from the photo-thermal response part and of which mechanical stiffness is reduced; and a top electrode and a bottom electrode on both surfaces of the deformation part, respectively.

REFRESHABLE BRAILLE DISPLAY
20210366309 · 2021-11-25 ·

A refreshable braille display device is provided comprising a plurality of Braille pins running through a perforated body of the reader, the pins arranged in the spacing and order of Braille dots of standard Braille cells. The Braille reader may be coupled to a device for Braille text generation via selective hammering or impacting of Braille pins. From a default position where all pins of the reader are raised relative to a first, front surface of the reader, one or more pins are selectively impacted in a sequence to create a Braille pattern of raised and lowered pins based on a desired text conversion.
