Tape head design having a null shield for same gap verify

The present disclosure generally relates to a tape drive including a tape head. The tape head comprises at least one same gap verify (SGV) module comprising a plurality of write transducer and read transducer pairs disposed on a substrate. Each pair comprises a null shield disposed between the write transducer and the read transducer. One or more of a position between the write transducer and the read transducer of each pair, a width, a height, a thickness, and a permeability of the null shield is adjusted to create a null region, and the read transducer is disposed in the null region. The SGV module is configured to write data to a tape using the write transducer of each pair and read verify the data written on the tape using the read transducer of each pair such that the write transducer and read transducer of each pair are concurrently operable.

IN-PLANE MAGNETIZED FILM, IN-PLANE MAGNETIZED FILM MULTILAYER STRUCTURE, HARD BIAS LAYER, MAGNETORESISTANCE EFFECT ELEMENT, AND SPUTTERING TARGET

An in-plane magnetized film for use as a hard bias layer of a magnetoresistive effect element contains metal Co, metal Pt, and an oxide and has a thickness of 20 nm or more and 80 nm or less, wherein: the in-plane magnetized film contains the metal Co in an amount of 45 at% or more and 80 at% or less and the metal Pt in an amount of 20 at% or more and 55 at% or less relative to a total of metal components of the in-plane magnetized film; the in-plane magnetized film contains the oxide in an amount of 3 vol% or more and 25 vol% or less relative to a whole amount of the in-plane magnetized film; and the in-plane direction average grain diameter of magnetic crystal grains of the in-plane magnetized film is 15 nm or more and 30 nm or less.

Two-dimensional magnetic recording (TDMR) disk drive with multiple sensors and circuitry for selection of an active pair of associated amplifiers

A two-dimensional magnetic recording (TDMR) disk drive has a gas-bearing slider that includes first and second sensors with a first cross-track spacing electrically coupled to a first magnetic shield, and third and fourth sensors with a different cross-track spacing electrically coupled to a second magnetic shield. The different spacings results in the first and third sensors and the second and fourth sensors having a cross-track spacing to accommodate for the effect of head skew. Each sensor is connected to an associated amplifier by a suspension trace and a common trace connected to its associated shield. Switching circuitry selects either the first and third amplifiers or the second and fourth amplifiers as the active pair depending on the radial location where the data is to be read. Thus the appropriate pair of sensors are aligned with the data tracks despite the presence of high head skew.

Tape head having sensors proximate to an edge

An apparatus according to one embodiment includes a module having a tape bearing surface, a first edge, and a second edge. A sensor is located in a thin film region of the module. The sensor has a free layer. A distance from the first edge to the free layer is less than a distance from the second edge to the free layer. A method according to another embodiment includes detecting a distance between a free layer of a sensor and an edge closest thereto. The free layer is positioned between an upper shield and the edge. A wrap angle is selected based on the detected distance for inducing tenting of a magnetic recording tape in a region above the free layer when the magnetic recording tape moves over the module.

MAGNETORESISTIVE EFFECT DEVICE

A magnetoresistive effect device includes a magnetoresistive effect element first and second ports, a signal line, an inductor, and a direct current input terminal. The first port, the magnetoresistive effect element, and the second port are connected in series in this order via the signal line. The inductor is connected to one of the signal line between the magnetoresistive effect element and the first port and the signal line between the magnetoresistive effect element and the second port and is capable of being connected to ground. The direct-current input terminal is connected to the other of the above signal lines. A closed circuit including the magnetoresistive effect element, the signal line, the inductor, the ground, and direct-current input terminal is capable of being formed. The magnetoresistive effect element is arranged so that direct current flows in a direction from a magnetization fixed layer to a magnetization free layer.

Magnetic read head with antiferromagentic layer

A tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) read sensor having a tabbed AFM layer and an extended pinned layer and methods for making the same are provided. The TMR read sensor has an AFM layer recessed from the air bearing surface, providing a reduced shield-to-shield distance.

Magnetic disk device with recording head including spin torque oscillator

According to one embodiment, a magnetic disk device includes a recording medium, a recording head including a main magnetic pole, a write shield magnetic pole, a coil, and a spin torque oscillator provided between the main magnetic pole and the write shield magnetic pole and a controller including a record current supply circuit and a drive current supply circuit. The controller executes a process of monitoring variation of a resistance value of the spin torque oscillator while increasing the record current in a state in which the spin torque oscillator is energized and detecting a record current value when the resistance value is increased most largely, and a process of setting the detected record current value to a lower limit of the record current supplied to the coil.

Read sensor capable of providing multiple effective read widths

An apparatus that includes a read sensor having a bearing surface and first and second free layers that are separated by an intermediate structure. The first FL includes multiple segments, with each segment having a width at the bearing surface. A sum of the widths of different ones of the multiple segments is a first width of the first FL. The second FL is unsegmented and has a second width at the bearing surface that is different from the first width of the first FL. The read sensor also includes a first terminal connected to a first one of the multiple segments of the first FL, and a second terminal connected to a second one of the multiple segments of the first FL. A third terminal is connected to the second FL. Control circuitry applies a bias current from either the first or second terminal to the third terminal.
