Methods of using embedded disconnected circuits in magnetic storage media of data storage devices

Disclosed herein are methods of using embedded disconnected circuits (EDC) in magnetic storage media to assist in reading data from and writing data to the magnetic storage media. A wireless activation signal is used to activate an EDC in a magnetic storage media. Once activated, the EDC may assist to record data in and/or read data from one or more memory locations of the magnetic storage media.

Two-dimensional magnetic recording (TDMR) read head structure with different stacked sensors and disk drive incorporating the structure

A hybrid read head structure for two-dimensional magnetic recording (TDMR) in a disk drive has two stacked current-perpendicular-to-the plane magnetoresistive (CPP-MR) read heads or sensors substantially aligned with one another in the along-the track direction to enable both sensors to read data from the same data track. The structure is a hybrid structure formed on the disk drive slider with the lower sensor being a dual free layer (DFL) or scissoring type of CPP-MR sensor and the upper sensor being a single free layer (SFL) type of CPP-MR sensor.

Scheduling low-priority disk seeks for multi-actuator data storage device

A first time period is determined during which a first head driven by a first actuator will be performing a track-following operation. A second time period is also determined during which a second head driven by a second actuator will be performing a low-priority disk access operation that includes a seek. The first and second actuators are independently movable such that the first and second disk access operations are capable of being performed in parallel. If it is determined that the seek of the second head will impact servo control of the track-following operation of the first head, a start time of the seek of the second head is changed to correspond to a time that mitigates impacts to the track-following operation of the first head.

Embedded disconnected circuits in magnetic storage media of data storage devices

Disclosed herein are magnetic storage media with embedded disconnected circuits, and magnetic storage systems comprising such media. A magnetic storage media comprises a recording layer comprising a storage location, and an embedded disconnected circuit (EDC) configured to assist in at least one of writing to or reading from the storage location in response to a wireless activation signal. A magnetic storage system comprises a signal generator configured to generate a wireless activation signal, a magnetic storage media with a plurality of storage locations, and a write transducer and/or a read receiver. The magnetic storage media has at least one EDC configured to assist in writing to and/or reading from at least one of the plurality of storage locations in response to the wireless activation signal.

Magnetic disk device and method

According to one embodiment, a magnetic disk device includes a magnetic disk including a plurality of tracks, first and second actuators, and a control circuit. The magnetic disk includes the plurality of tracks. The control circuit writes, in a first track by using the first actuator, second data having a size corresponding to a first number among the first data. In addition, the control circuit writes, in a second track by using the second actuator, third data having a size corresponding to a second number among the first data. Each of the first track and the second track is a track among the plurality of tracks. The first number is a number of writable sectors included in the first track. The second number is a number of writable sectors included in the second track. The third data is data received subsequent to the second data.

Magnetic disk device and recording method

A magnetic disk device includes a magnetic head that writes data on and reads data from the magnetic disk, and a controller circuit. The controller circuit is configured to control a gap between the magnetic head and the magnetic disk, and select one of two or more gap values for the fly height, based on a write location in the magnetic disk of data to be written by the magnetic head.

Selectable magnetic writers of different target geometries for reducing performance variance

A method of forming a recording head for use with a data storage medium in a data storage device. The method includes forming first and second writers of different target geometries. A first recording measurement is performed on one or more storage media using the first writer. A second recording measurement is performed on the one or more storage media using the second writer. Based on a comparison of the first and second recording measurements to a predetermined quantity, either the first writer or the second writer is selected to be operational in the data storage device.

Multiple-actuator drive with separate, radially-defined, zones having reduced skew and/or different track properties

First tracks are read via a first head that is moved via a first actuator over a first, radially-defined, zone of a disk surface. Second tracks are read via a second head that is moved via a second actuator over a second zone of the disk surface that is separate from the first zone. The first and second heads are optimized to read data within first and second skew angle ranges associated with the first and second zones. The first and second skew angle ranges are each less than a total skew angle range of the disk surface.
