Segmented magnetic recording write head for writing timing-based servo patterns
An apparatus according to one embodiment includes a first module having a plurality of first write transducers, and a plurality of second modules each having a second write transducer. Planes of deposition of write gaps of the second write transducers are oriented at an angle of greater than 4 degrees relative to planes of deposition of write gaps of the first write transducers.
Tape head having sub-ambient channel and methods of manufacture
An apparatus according to one embodiment includes a module having a tape bearing surface, an array of magnetic transducers, and a channel in the tape bearing surface. The channel has a longitudinal axis oriented about parallel to a longitudinal axis of the array of magnetic transducers for inducing tenting of a moving magnetic recording tape above the array of magnetic transducers. A method according to one embodiment includes forming a channel in a tape bearing surface of a module. The channel is formed to have a longitudinal axis about parallel to a longitudinal axis of an array of magnetic transducers. The channel is formed proximate to the array of magnetic transducers for inducing tenting of a moving magnetic recording tape above the array of magnetic transducers.

METHODS FOR SELECTING WRAP ANGLE FOR INDUCING TAPE TENTING ABOVE TRANSDUCER
In one general embodiment, a method includes determining a distance from a transducer of a module to an edge of the module closest thereto, and selecting a wrap angle based on the determined distance for inducing tenting of a moving magnetic recording tape in a region above the transducer. In another general embodiment, a method includes running a magnetic recording tape over a tape bearing surface having at least one edge, and detecting signals from the tape at differing wrap angles for estimating a height of tenting of the tape above a transducer at each of the wrap angles. A wrap angle is selected to provide about a predefined height of tenting of the tape above the transducer.
TAPE HEAD AND SYSTEM HAVING ASYMMETRICAL CONSTRUCTION
An apparatus according to one embodiment includes a module having a tape bearing surface, a first edge, and a second edge, where a tape tenting region extends from the first edge toward the second edge, the first edge being a first end of the tape tenting region, a second end of the tape tenting region being positioned between the first and second edges. The apparatus includes a guide positioned relative to the first edge for inducing tenting of a moving magnetic recording tape and a transducer positioned in the tape tenting region. In addition, the module has a wear coating on a media facing side of the transducer, where a peak height is defined between the peak of tenting and an upper surface of the coating. The thickness of the wear coating is in a range of between about 0.5 and about 3 times the peak height.
TAPE HEAD AND SYSTEM HAVING ASYMMETRICAL CONSTRUCTION
According to one embodiment, a method includes determining a first distance from a sensor to a first edge closest thereto, where the sensor is positioned between a lower shield and the first edge, selecting a first wrap angle based on the first distance for inducing tenting of a moving magnetic recording tape in a region above the sensor, determining a second distance from a second edge to the sensor, and selecting a second wrap angle based on the determined second distance for affecting or not affecting the tenting of a moving magnetic recording tape in the region above the sensor.
Tape head and system having asymmetrical construction
An apparatus according to one embodiment includes a module having a tape bearing surface, a first edge, and a second edge. A first tape tenting region extends from the first edge along the tape bearing surface toward the second edge. A transducer is located in a thin film region of the module. A distance from the first edge to the transducer is less than a distance from the second edge to the transducer. The transducer is positioned in the first tape tenting region.

Direction dependent tape head assembly to reduce tape-head friction
A tape appliance that includes two outer write heads and an inner read head arranged along a magnetic tape path in WRW order, each write head tape bearing surface angled downward towards the inner read head. The heads are configured such that for a first direction of tape travel, the tape engages the tape bearing surface of a first write head followed by engaging the tape bearing surface of the read head and flies over the tape bearing surface of the other write head. For the reverse direction of tape travel, the tape engages the tape bearing surface of the other write head followed by engaging the tape bearing surface of the write head and flies over the tape bearing surface of the first write head.
