VARIABLE SCOPING CAPABILITY FOR PHYSICAL TAPE LAYOUT DIAGNOSTIC STRUCTURE OF TAPE STORAGE DEVICE
A computer program product, according to one embodiment, includes a computer readable storage medium having program instructions embodied therewith. The computer readable storage medium is not a transitory signal per se. Moreover, the program instructions readable and/or executable by a controller to cause the controller to perform a method which includes: collecting, by the controller, data relating to operation of a tape drive; storing, by the controller, the collected data in wrap sections of a tape map; and storing, by the controller, a subset of the collected data in a slice region upon experiencing a first trigger condition and/or upon reaching a predefined location on a tape. Moreover, the wrap sections of the tape map correlate to physical lengths of tape. Other systems, methods, and computer program products are described in additional embodiments.
Measurement of a reversed side shield magnetization condition
A method that includes supplying a predetermined signal to a write head having side shields. The method also includes performing, by the write head, a recording operation on a surface of a data storage medium, when the predetermined signal is supplied to the write head, to provide a recorded magnetization pattern. The method further includes carrying out measurements on a portion of the recorded magnetization pattern influenced by a magnetization of the side shields. The measurements are employed to determine whether a reversed side shield magnetization condition is present in the write head.
Variable scoping capability for physical tape layout diagnostic structure of tape storage device
According to one embodiment, a controller-implemented method collecting data relating to operation of a tape drive, storing the collected data in wrap sections of a tape map, where the wrap sections of the tape map correlate to physical lengths of tape. The method also includes and storing a subset of the collected data in a slice region upon at least one of experiencing a first trigger condition and reaching a predefined location on a tape. Other systems, methods, and computer program products are described in additional embodiments.
CHARACTERIZING THE I/O-PERFORMANCE-PER-WATT OF A COMPUTING DEVICE ACROSS A RANGE OF VIBRATIONAL OPERATING ENVIRONMENTS
The disclosed embodiments relate to a system that characterizes I/O performance of a computing device in terms of energy consumption across a range of vibrational operating environments. During operation, the system executes a test script on a computing device that is affixed to a programmable vibration table, wherein the test script causes the computing device to perform a predetermined I/O workload. While the test script is executing, the system controls the programmable vibration table to subject the computing device to different vibrational operating environments. At the same time, the system obtains test results by monitoring a progress of the test script and an associated power consumption of the computing device. Finally, the system uses the obtained test results to characterize the I/O performance of the computing device in terms of energy consumption across the range of vibrational operating environments.
Information recording and playback device
An information recording and playback device includes a recording and playback unit, and a controller. The controller divides a recording area of an optical disk into a first recording area which is at an inner circumference side, and a second recording area which is at an outer circumference side. The controller controls the recording and playback unit such that the unit records or plays back data in the first recording area at a first speed, and records or plays back data in the second recording area at a second speed slower than the first speed. The predetermined radius is set to a boundary between an area in which a control residual exceeds a predetermined reference value when servo control related to focusing and tracking is performed on the recording area of the optical disk, and an area in which the control residual does not exceed the predetermined reference value.
Verify first write to each storage area of hard disk drive
Identifying recording disk defects in a data storage device such as a hard disk drive (HDD), for which disk defects are not previously identified, includes responsive to a first user data write request to a particular storage area of a disk medium, writing the user data to the particular storage area, reading the written user data from the particular storage area, and verifying the integrity of the user data read from the particular storage area. Upon passing, a second user data write request to the same particular storage area can be fulfilled without again reading and verifying. Upon failing, the particular storage area is marked as defective and the user data is written to a different storage area. This procedure can be repeated in response to each initial user write request to each storage area of each disk medium, foregoing the need for disk surface scanning during manufacturing.
Disk surface defect detection
The present application provides a transducer head comprising a laser source configured to heat a target storage medium surface, and a thermal sensor configured to detect a defect on the target storage medium surface. The present application also provides a method comprising heating a target storage medium surface with an energy source configured in a transducer head to irradiate the target storage medium surface, and detecting a defect on the target storage medium surface using a thermal sensor configured in the transducer head. Other implementations are also described and recited herein.
Modular data storage device testing system
A data storage device testing system may be configured with at least a test slot, a loader assembly, and an exchange assembly. The loader assembly can be positioned to respectively engage and disengage a test deck with the test slot. The exchange assembly may be configured to open an access port portion of the test deck and subsequently replace a tested data storage component housed within the first test deck with an untested data storage component.
