Servo gray code quality detector
Various embodiments provide a Gray code detector that is not designed to look for a specific defect signature, but rather looks for wedges that are in error or close to being in error, as determined through a probabilistic analysis that considers the mean and sigma of a minimum Viterbi Metric Margin (minVMM) distribution of a servo wedge relative to a defined threshold for a Wedge Error Rate (WER).
VARIABLE SCOPING CAPABILITY FOR PHYSICAL TAPE LAYOUT DIAGNOSTIC STRUCTURE OF TAPE STORAGE DEVICE
A computer program product, according to one embodiment, includes a computer readable storage medium having program instructions embodied therewith. The computer readable storage medium is not a transitory signal per se. Moreover, the program instructions readable and/or executable by a controller to cause the controller to perform a method which includes: collecting, by the controller, data relating to operation of a tape drive; storing, by the controller, the collected data in wrap sections of a tape map; and storing, by the controller, a subset of the collected data in a slice region upon experiencing a first trigger condition and/or upon reaching a predefined location on a tape. Moreover, the wrap sections of the tape map correlate to physical lengths of tape. Other systems, methods, and computer program products are described in additional embodiments.
Data recovery using a multi-reader head
In a method, read signals from each of a plurality of read transducers of a data head are buffered for each of a plurality of cross-track positions of the head relative to a data track. The buffered read signals are processed to establish a quality metric for each of the read signals and at least one combination read signal comprising at least two of the read signals. A data recovery cross-track position and a reader configuration comprising one or more of the read transducers are identified based on the quality metrics. A data read operation is then performed with the data head in the data recovery cross-track position using the read signals from the identified reader configuration.
Variable scoping capability for physical tape layout diagnostic structure of tape storage device
According to one embodiment, a controller-implemented method collecting data relating to operation of a tape drive, storing the collected data in wrap sections of a tape map, where the wrap sections of the tape map correlate to physical lengths of tape. The method also includes and storing a subset of the collected data in a slice region upon at least one of experiencing a first trigger condition and reaching a predefined location on a tape. Other systems, methods, and computer program products are described in additional embodiments.
Selecting a maximum laser power for a calibration based on a previously measured function
An operational laser power for a heat-assisted, magnetic recording head is selected based on a function of a write quality metric versus laser power. The write quality metric of data written to a magnetic recording medium is monitored at the operational laser power. Responsive to the write quality metric satisfying a threshold, a power difference between the operational laser power and an offset laser power is determined. The offset laser power corresponds to a point of the function where the write quality metric is approximately equal to the threshold. A maximum laser power is set for a calibration operation. The maximum laser power is based on the sum of the operational laser power and the power difference.
Acoustic hard drive surrogate
Systems and methods for an acoustic hard drive surrogate. In some embodiments, an Information Handling System (IHS) may include a chassis having a hard drive bay, and an acoustic hard drive surrogate coupled to the hard drive bay, where the acoustic hard drive surrogate includes a microphone configured to measure a combined airflow-induced and fan-generated acoustic wave transmitted over the air within the chassis and received at a selected point on a surface of the acoustic hard drive surrogate, and where the measurement excludes vibration received by the acoustic hard drive surrogate through the chassis.
MULTI-TRACK READER FOR IMPROVED SIGNAL TO NOISE RATIO
A system according to one embodiment includes a magnetic head having a plurality of sensors arranged to simultaneously read at least three immediately adjacent data tracks on a magnetic medium, wherein none of the sensors share more than one lead with any other of the sensors. Such embodiment may be implemented in a magnetic data storage system such as a disk drive system, which may include a magnetic head, a drive mechanism for passing a magnetic medium (e.g., hard disk) over the magnetic head, and a controller electrically coupled to the magnetic head.
LASER MODE HOPPING DETECTION METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR A HEAT-ASSISTED MAGNETIC RECORDING DEVICE
An apparatus and method provide for performing, using a heat-assisted magnetic recording head, multiple sequential writes to a recording medium, and recording a metric of write performance for each of the writes. The apparatus and method further provide for calculating fluctuations in the metric, detecting whether the head has a laser mode hopping problem using the metric fluctuations, and categorizing a severity of the laser mode hopping problem.

Tape media kiss-contact read verification
Determining quality metrics of a magnetic tape recording medium. A production module that includes a write element that writes magnetic transitions to the magnetic tape is substantially in constant physical engagement with the magnetic tape. A supplemental module that includes one or more read elements periodically physically engages the magnetic tape, and the read elements generate an electrical signal corresponding to transitions written to the magnetic recording medium by a write element. A computer receives information representative of the electrical signal and determines if a quality metric of the magnetic recording medium derived from the electrical signal is within a defined range. If the quality metric is not within the defined range, a defined action is performed by the computer.
