SELECTIVE INDEX WRITING PRIOR TO UNTHREADING A MAGNETIC RECORDING TAPE
A drive-implemented method according to one embodiment includes determining that unthreading of a tape is to be performed, and in response to the determination that the unthreading of the tape is to be performed, determining whether to write an index on the tape prior to unthreading the tape. In response to a determination to write the index on the tape, the index is written on the tape prior to unthreading the tape. The tape is then unthreaded. The drive-implemented method further includes receiving a write request after the unthreading, rethreading the tape, and writing data corresponding to the write request on the tape. The index stored on the tape prior to the unthreading is overwritten with the data corresponding to the write request.
Retaining high resolution tape directory in overwritten end of data set
An End of Data Set (EOD) including a High Resolution Tape Directory (HRTD) is written at a position next to a last written user data set on a tape. When appending a new user data set, the new user data set is written starting from a position next to an end longitudinal position (LPOS) of the EOD to generate an overwritten EOD.

Storage system using unformatted digital optical tape
Digital optical tape archival storage systems and methods are disclosed. A digital optical tape recorder simultaneously writes data and two or more guide tracks onto an unformatted digital optical tape recording medium. A digital optical tape reader includes a camera and an image processor. The camera captures a two-dimensional image of the digital optical tape recording medium including the data and the two or more guide tracks. The image processor extracts the data from the two-dimensional image based, at least in part, on the guide tracks.

An apparatus, method, system, and program product are disclosed for tape copying. One method includes mounting a first source tape of multiple source tapes on a source tape drive. The method includes mounting a destination tape on a destination tape drive. The method also includes copying a first index of an index partition of the first source tape to a first copied index of an index partition of the destination tape. The method includes storing first position information corresponding to the first copied index on the destination tape. The method also includes copying first data of a data partition of the first source tape to a first copied data of a data partition of the destination tape. The method includes storing second position information corresponding to the first copied data on the destination tape.

A method for writing data from a table to a tape includes setting a number of partitions on the tape, where the number of partitions is greater than or equal to a number of columns of the table to be written to the tape, and writing data from each column of the table to at least one partition of the tape, the at least one partition including two or more wraps, the data is written from a top of the two or more wraps towards a bottom of the two or more wraps in a direction of a width of the at least one partition. The written data is reciprocated from a beginning of the tape to an end of the tape in a longitudinal direction of the tape such that writing of a last data entry of one column ends at a beginning of the two or more wraps.
Selective index writing prior to unthreading a magnetic recording tape
A drive-implemented method according to one embodiment includes determining that unthreading of a tape is to be performed, and in response to the determination that the unthreading of the tape is to be performed, determining whether to write an index on the tape prior to unthreading the tape. In response to a determination to write the index on the tape, the index is written on the tape prior to unthreading the tape. The tape is then unthreaded.
WRITING FILE INFORMATION FOR TAPE FILE SYSTEMS
A computer-implemented method, according to one embodiment, includes: receiving a first portion of data to be written in a magnetic medium, dividing the first portion of data into a plurality of blocks, appending an identification segment having identification information therein to each of the blocks, wherein each block and the corresponding identification information appended thereto forms a record, writing each record in a data partition of the magnetic medium, and writing an index in the data partition of the magnetic medium in response to a predetermined condition being met, wherein the index is associated with all data on the magnetic medium.
