SELF-RETRACTING TAPE RULE
A tape rule comprises a blade, a reel, a spring, a lock, and a housing. The blade comprises a substrate and a coating. The coating is configured to provide color, environmental protection, and/or abrasion resistance. In some embodiments, (1) the coating is formed from non-polymer materials; (2) the blade comprises reinforcements metallurgically bonded to the blade at or near a free end; (3) measurement indicia comprise locally annealed portions of the substrate or the coating that create color contrasts; (4) the measurement indicia comprise portions of the substrate visible through gaps in the coating; (5) the measurement indicia comprise voids in the substrate filled with a coating material having a contrasting color; and/or (6) the substrate has a surface texture configured to change an appearance of the coating relative to an appearance of the coating on an as rolled surface finish of the metal substrate.
Tape measure with tape blade profile increasing tape standout
A tape measure, including a tape measure blade having a cross-sectional profile to increase standout is provided. The profile has a curved shape that increases standout. The tape blade may have a flat width of 30 mm or less and a standout of at least 132 inches. The tape blade may have a flat width greater than or equal to 29 mm and less than 32 mm and a standout of at least 156 inches. The tape blade may have a flat width greater than 32 mm and a standout of at least 168 inches.
MEASURING INSTRUMENT
A measuring instrument that reads a measure including a plurality of reading patterns arranged in a length direction of the measure, each reading pattern including a plurality of patterns arranged in a width direction of the measure, includes: a flattening member that increases a flatness of the measure; and a first reader that optically reads the plurality of patterns arranged in the width direction included in a single reading pattern from the measure in a state where the flatness is increased by the flattening member.
COMPACT-SIZED TAPE MEASURE
Provided is a compact-sized tape measure including a housing, a reel rotatably mounted in the housing, and a blade wound on an outer surface of the reel and drawn out through an inlet of the housing, in which the reel includes a spring providing a force for winding the blade and a bobbin providing an inner space receiving the spring and an outer space for winding and storing the blade, and a width of a spring receiving space capable of receiving the spring in the inner space is larger than a width of a blade receiving space capable of receiving the blade in the outer space.
Tape measure with motor spring retraction system
A tool, such as a tape measure, including a spring-based retraction system is shown. The spring-based retraction system includes a motor spring system that drives a tape reel during tape retraction. The output drum of the motor spring system is coupled to the tape reel such that rotation of the reel causes rotation of the output drum. The output drum is located adjacent to the tape reel, and the output drum and tape reel may have a common axis of rotation.
Tape Measure with Retraction Spring Adjacent to Tape Reel
A tool, such as a tape measure, including a spring-based retraction system is shown. The retraction system includes a spiral spring that is located outside of and adjacent to a tape reel about which a tape blade is wound. This arrangement provides for a decreased housing height which improves the ability to grip and handle the tape measure.
Tape Measure with Compact Retraction System
A tool, such as a tape measure, including a spring-based retraction system is shown. Various spring-based retraction system embodiments are configured to decrease the size occupied by the spring within the tape measure housing, which consequently reduces tape measure housing size providing a more compact tape measure. Various spring-based retraction system embodiments are configured to control retraction of the tape measure in a manner that reduces whip or otherwise controls tape blade retraction. Some retraction system embodiments utilize a reduction gear train, and others utilize a compression spring and a transmission system that converts rotational movement of the tape reel to axial movement, which compresses the spring.

Measuring tape with improved center post
A measuring tape device may include a housing having an aperture, a reel assembly enclosed within the housing, and a blade having a first end configured to extend from the housing through the aperture and a second end configured to be wound on the reel assembly. The reel assembly may be configured to alternately allow the blade to be withdrawn from the reel assembly through the aperture or received in the aperture onto the reel assembly via operation of a spring. The spring is anchored to a post disposed within the housing at a first end of the spring and operably coupled to the blade at a second end of the spring. The post includes a slot dividing the post into a first post portion and a second post portion. Each of the first and second post portions may have rounded edges at portions thereof that define lateral boundaries of the slot.
