Torque and angular sensor

A torque and angular sensor includes a differential angle sensor to precisely measure a differential angle between an input shaft and an output shaft and an angular position sensor to measure the angle of at least one of the shafts over a full angular range. The differential angle sensor measures an output rotation angle of an output target and an input rotation angle of an input target using changing voltages in taps on the input and output coils, which each carry an AC excitation current and which are each inductively coupled with teeth on targets fixed to rotate with one of the shafts. Input shaft rotation angle region is combined with the input angular position as a rotation angle composite. A raw torque angle is determined based on the difference between the input and output rotation angles. Rotational and Linear compensation provides a high-precision torque angle.

Disclosed is a valve actuator configured to determine, during operation of a valve by an alternating current (AC) motor of the valve actuator, an amount of torque produced by the AC motor. A process for measuring the amount of torque produced by the AC motor includes actuating a valve using the AC motor of the valve actuator, measuring, by a microcontroller of the valve actuator and during the actuating of the valve, a time interval between: (i) a first zero crossing of a waveform of AC voltage applied to the AC motor, and (ii) a second zero crossing of a waveform of AC current drawn by the AC motor, and determining, based on the time interval, an amount of torque produced by the AC motor during the actuating.

The invention relates to a device, an arrangement and a method for characterizing the torsion, rotation, and/or positioning of a shaft by generating a periodic magnetic field of a magnetic field generator disposed between at least two magnetic field detectors by applying a periodic exciter signal. The field is modified by the shaft and induces an output signal at each of the magnetic field detectors. The difference with respect to amplitude or phase between the exciter signal and the first output signal is detected as a first measured variable and between the exciter signal and the second output signal is detected as a second measured variable. The total of and/or the difference between the first and the second measured variables is calculated, and the torsion, rotation, and/or positioning of the shaft is characterized based thereon.

The system and method determines the torque applied to a rotating shaft by a load. A first sensor detects rotation of a first wheel and a second sensor detects rotation of a second wheel. A third sensor is proximate to the first sensor. A processor determines: 1) a magnitude of a phase angle (.sub.A) based on the first and second sensors and having an unknown sign; 2) a magnitude of a phase angle (.sub.B) based on the second and third sensors and having an unknown sign; and 3) a magnitude of a phase angle (.sub.C) based on the first and third sensors and having a known sign. The processor determines a sign of the phase angle (.sub.A) based on the values of the phase angles (.sub.C) and (.sub.C) and determines a torque value from the load applied to the shaft at least in part based on the magnitude and sign of the phase angle (.sub.A).
