Systems and methods for scour monitoring with fiber optic sensors

A scour monitoring system may provide a housing that is separated into multiple segments that are fluidically isolated from each other. The scour monitoring system may be position adjacent to a structure to be monitored for bridge scouring. Each of the segments may provide a water-swellable material positioned near or in contact with a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) cable. If water penetrates a segment, the water-swellable material may expand to deform the FBG cable. The wavelength of the FBG cable may be monitored periodically for changes, thereby providing moisture detection when a change in wavelength is detected.

A system is for determining a viscoelastic property of a flexible seal, such as for use in connection with a vessel having a junction formed between first and second rigid parts that serve to compress the seal in use. An oscillator including a magnetic material is coupled to the flexible seal, such as in a cantilevered manner with an integral part embedded in the flexible seal and projecting outwardly therefrom. A generator such as an electric coil is provided for generating a magnetic field for causing the magnetic material to output a signal representative of a dynamic mechanical response of the magnetic material. A sensor senses the signal. An analyzer may be provided for analyzing the signal to determine the viscoelastic property of the object. Flexible seals with one or more embedded permanent magnets are disclosed, as are related methods.

A thermowell assembly is provided for use in measuring a temperature of a process fluid. The thermowell assembly includes an elongate thermowell body which is configured to mount to a process vessel and extend into the process fluid contained in the process vessel. An elongate bore extends along a length of the elongate thermowell body from a proximal end of the elongate thermowell body proximate a wall of the process vessel to a sealed distal end of the elongate thermowell body positioned in the process fluid. A side bore extends from an exterior of the thermowell assembly to the elongate bore. The side bore is positioned outside of the process vessel. A verification valve includes an inlet coupled to the side bore at the exterior of the thermowell assembly and further includes an outlet. The verification valve allows an operator to verify a presence of process fluid in the elongate bore by opening the verification valve and observing process fluid at the outlet of the verification valve.
