Identifying candidate cells using image analysis with overlap thresholds

A method for identifying candidate target cells within a biological fluid specimen includes a digital image of the biological fluid specimen with the digital image having a plurality of color channels, identifying first connected regions of pixels of a minimum first intensity in a first channel, identifying second connected regions of pixels of a minimum second intensity in a second channel, and determining first connected regions and second connected regions that spatially overlap. For a pair of a first connected region and a second connected region that spatially overlap, whether the second connected region overlaps the first connected region by a threshold amount is determined, and if the second connected region overlaps the first connected region by the threshold amount then the portion of the image corresponding to the overlap is continued to be treated as a candidate for classification.

Flow cell for analyzing particles in a liquid to be examined

The invention relates to a device for examining particles in a liquid to be examined, comprising a flow passage through which the liquid to be examined is moved. The flow passage has at least one inlet through which at least one sheath fluid flows into the flow passage such that the at least one sheath fluid forms at least one sheath flow in the flow passage. The device further comprises a wave generating device for piezoacoustically generating sound waves which propagate through the flow passage transversely to the flow direction of the liquid to be examined and form wave nodes on a monitoring plane such that particles to be examined of the liquid to be examined are moved onto the monitoring plane and accumulate thereon on the basis of the pressure effect of the sound waves in the transverse direction.

LABEL-FREE BIO-AEROSOL SENSING USING MOBILE MICROSCOPY AND DEEP LEARNING

A label-free bio-aerosol sensing platform and method uses a field-portable and cost-effective device based on holographic microscopy and deep-learning, which screens bio-aerosols at a high throughput level. Two different deep neural networks are utilized to rapidly reconstruct the amplitude and phase images of the captured bio-aerosols, and to output particle information for each bio-aerosol that is imaged. This includes, a classification of the type or species of the particle, particle size, particle shape, particle thickness, or spatial feature(s) of the particle. The platform was validated using the label-free sensing of common bio-aerosol types, e.g., Bermuda grass pollen, oak tree pollen, ragweed pollen, Aspergillus spore, and Alternaria spore and achieved >94% classification accuracy. The label-free bio-aerosol platform, with its mobility and cost-effectiveness, will find several applications in indoor and outdoor air quality monitoring.
