The systems and methods disclosed herein permit automated preparation of biological specimens for examination. The disclosed systems and methods provide fast, efficient, and highly uniform specimen processing using minimal quantities of fluids. The methods include at least a fixing phase for fixing a biological specimen to a substrate such as a microscope slide, a staining phase for staining the specimen, and a rinsing phase for rinsing the specimen. One or more of the fixing, staining, and rinsing phases include one or more agitation cycles for distributing reagents evenly and uniformly across the specimen. The systems can be implemented as a standalone device or as a component in a larger system for preparing and examining biological specimens.

This disclosure is directed to a device and a system for picking a target material from a sample.

Systems and methods for transferring liquids

One or more liquids are transferred from a source array to one or more remotely positioned destination sites such as chambers by utilizing one or more movable transfer elements, such as contact pins or capillaries. The source array may include a predetermined organization of addresses at which materials are positioned. One or more materials may be selected for transfer. Based on the selection, one or more addresses may be accessed by the transfer element(s). The addresses may correspond to spots on a surface of the source array. Each spot may be a feature containing one or more (bio)chemical compounds. At the chamber(s), the material(s) may be processed, such by reaction with one or more reagents. The reaction(s) may entail synthesis of one or more desired products. Alternatively, reaction(s) may be performed at the source array, and the product(s) then transferred to the chamber(s).

High throughput miniaturized assay system and methods

The present invention provides an apparatus for conducting biological assays which employs virtual wells in lieu of the physical wells of conventional array plates. Also provided are methods of processing a sample and/or culturing cells using the apparatus and systems described herein. In some embodiments, the apparatus includes a first structure having a sheet layer with a plurality of discrete through holes; and a second structure coupled to the first structure, the second structure including a base layer. At least a portion of a first surface of the sheet layer of the first structure is exposed from the second structure, and a second surface of the sheet layer, opposite to the first surface of the sheet layer, is embedded in the base layer of the second structure adjacent the first surface of the base layer.

An Apparatus and A Method for Transferring Material
20190241858 · 2019-08-08 ·

The present invention relates to an apparatus and a method for transferring materials such as cells or microbial colonies during sample preparation. The apparatus comprises a filament having a first end for carrying the materials; a head portion adapted to movably receive at least part of the filament; wherein the filament is movable such that the first end protrudes by a pre-determined length from the head portion to allow transfer of the materials to and from the first end. The method comprises steps of arranging a first end of a filament to contact the source location to load the material at the first end; arranging the first end to contact the target location to unload at least part of the materials from the first end; cutting a length of the filament from the first end to generate a fresh end of the filament which is free of the material.
