Optical filter devices for providing a reflective event in an optical network are disclosed. In one embodiment, the optical filter device comprises an optical filter assembly for reflecting one or more preselected wavelengths and a housing. In one embodiment, the housing comprises a plug end and a receptacle end for optical connection into a link or connection node of an optical network. The housing comprises a passageway between the plug end and the receptacle end, and the plug end comprises a shroud with a single fiber connector footprint. At least a portion of the optical filter assembly is disposed within the passageway of the housing. The optical filter devices disclosed allow the network operator the flexibility to choose where to position a reflective location in the optical network along with the ability to move, add or change the reflective location as desired.

Device and system for detecting dynamic strain
A device and system for detecting dynamic strain. The device comprises a longitudinally extending carrier and an optical fiber embedded along an outer surface of a length of the carrier. The optical fiber comprises at least one pair of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) tuned to reflect substantially identical wavelengths. The system comprises the device and an interrogator comprising a laser source and a photodetector. The interrogator is configured to perform interferometry by shining laser light along the optical fiber and detecting light reflected by the FBGs. The interrogator outputs dynamic strain measurements based on interferometry performed on the reflected light.

Digital fabrication of a small diameter polymer optical waveguide
A novel polymer optical waveguide and method of manufacturing is presented herein. A digitally manufactured process is described which utilizes a micro-dispensed UV optical adhesive as the contour guiding cladding, a fused deposition modeling technology for creating a core, additional optical adhesive to complete the cladding and a subtractive laser process to finish the two ends of the optical interconnect.
Systems and methods for scour monitoring with fiber optic sensors
A scour monitoring system may provide a housing that is separated into multiple segments that are fluidically isolated from each other. The scour monitoring system may be position adjacent to a structure to be monitored for bridge scouring. Each of the segments may provide a water-swellable material positioned near or in contact with a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) cable. If water penetrates a segment, the water-swellable material may expand to deform the FBG cable. The wavelength of the FBG cable may be monitored periodically for changes, thereby providing moisture detection when a change in wavelength is detected.
Opening and closing detection sensor
An opening and closing detection sensor of the present invention includes a fixed base, a moving base, an optical fiber, and a moving member. The moving base is disposed so as to be movable relative to the fixed base. The optical fiber includes an FBG part where a Bragg wavelength varies responding to an interval between the fixed base and the moving base. The moving member moves between a first position corresponding to either one of an opened state or a closed state of an object and a second position corresponding to the other state. The moving member includes a locking part. The locking part abuts on the moving base between a third position located between the first position and the second position, and the second position, thereby moving the moving base together with the moving member, and moving the moving base in a direction separated from the fixed base.

Apparatuses relate generally to a fiber optic cable. In such an apparatus, a housing has a channel or bore for receipt of a portion of the fiber optic cable having a fiber optic sensor. An acoustic interface layer is coupled to a surface of the housing to reduce stress wave coupling loss at an interface between the fiber optic sensor and a host structure surface. In another such apparatus, a patch structure is for a fiber optic cable coupled to a fiber optic voltage conditioner. In yet another such apparatus, a fiber optic voltage conditioner is coupled for optical communication to a fiber optic cable having a Fiber Bragg Grating sensor. The fiber optic voltage conditioner includes a tunable light source having a broadband light source or a gain medium configured to provide a narrowband light signal from a broadband light signal for providing to the fiber optic cable.
