A waveguide bend which has low loss while keeping the curvature radius small in a waveguide with a given A is realized. An optical waveguide has a straight waveguide and a waveguide bend connected to each other, and tapered waveguide bends inserted between the straight waveguide and the waveguide bend, a curvature radius of the tapered waveguide bend being equal to a curvature radius of the waveguide bend, a waveguide width of the tapered waveguide bend changing continuously from the waveguide width of the straight waveguide at the connection point to the waveguide width of the waveguide bend. A waveguide width of the waveguide bend is larger than a waveguide width of the straight waveguide at a connection point and the tapered waveguide bend and the straight waveguide are connected with an optical axis of the tapered waveguide bend and an optical axis of the straight waveguide being offset.

Structures for an optical power splitter and methods of forming a structure for an optical power splitter. The structure includes a first waveguide core having a first arm, a second waveguide core including a second arm, and a third waveguide core having a third arm laterally positioned between the first arm and the second arm. The third arm has a longitudinal axis. The first arm is longitudinally offset from the third arm parallel to the longitudinal axis such that the third arm and the first arm are laterally adjacent over a first overlap distance. The second arm is longitudinally offset from the third arm parallel to the longitudinal axis such that the third arm and the second arm are laterally adjacent over a second overlap distance. The first overlap distance is greater than the second overlap distance to provide an overlap offset.

Photonic Integrated Circuit (PIC) Radio Frequency Oscillator

A technology is described for a Photonic Integrated Circuit (PIC) radio frequency (RF) oscillator. The PIC RF oscillator can comprise an optical gain media coupled to a first mirror and configured to be coupled to the PIC. The PIC can comprise a first optical cavity located within the PIC, a tunable mirror to form a first optical path between the first mirror in the gain media and the first tunable mirror, and a frequency tunable intra-cavity dual tone resonator positioned within the first optical cavity to constrain the first optical cavity having a common optical path to produce tow primary laser tones with a tunable frequency spacing. A photo detector is optically coupled to the PIC and configured to mix the two primary laser tones to form an RF output signal with a frequency selected by the tunable frequency spacing of the two primary tones.

LATERAL WAVEGUIDE PHOTODETECTOR COUPLER

A waveguide coupler includes a coupling section which evanescently couples an optical signal, received from an input waveguide, with an absorbing waveguide. Structurally, the coupling section is an elongated waveguide with one end butt-coupled to the input waveguide. Further, the coupling section defines an engagement side edge which is positioned at a predetermined distance from a dimensionally compatible side surface area of the absorbing waveguide. In this combination, evanescence from the optical signal is directed laterally from the coupling section, through the engagement side edge of the coupling section, and through an assisting component, to the absorbing waveguide for use with a photodetector.
