20170356738 · 2017-12-14 ·

Provided is an optical receptacle (140) having an installation plane (141), an optical plane, and a reference plane (147). An inclination angle of the reference plane (147) with respect to the installation plane (141) is smaller than an inclination angle of the optical plane with respect to the installation plane (141). Then, a first inclination angle θ1 that is the inclination angle of the reference plane (147) with respect to the installation plane (141) and a second inclination angle θ2 that is an inclination angle of the optical plane with respect to the reference plane (147) are measured. Then, the first inclination angle θ1 is added to the second inclination angle θ2 to calculate a third inclination angle θ3 that is the inclination angle of the optical plane with respect to the installation plane (141).

Method and system for integrated power combiners

A system for integrated power combiners is disclosed and may include receiving optical signals in input optical waveguides and phase-modulating the signals to configure a phase offset between signals received at a first optical coupler, where the first optical coupler may generate output signals having substantially equal optical powers. Output signals of the first optical coupler may be phase-modulated to configure a phase offset between signals received at a second optical coupler, which may generate an output signal having an optical power of essentially zero and a second output signal having a maximized optical power. Optical signals received by the input optical waveguides may be generated utilizing a polarization-splitting grating coupler to enable polarization-insensitive combining of optical signals. Optical power may be monitored using optical detectors. The monitoring of optical power may be used to determine a desired phase offset between the signals received at the first optical coupler.

Methods and systems for integrated multi-port waveguide photodetectors are disclosed and may include an optical receiver on a chip, where the optical receiver comprises a multi-port waveguide photodetector having three or more input ports. The optical receiver may be operable to receive optical signals via one or more grating couplers, couple optical signals to the photodetector via optical waveguides in the chip, and generate an output electrical signal based on the coupled optical signals using the photodetector. The photodetector may include four ports coupled to two PSGCs. The optical signals may be coupled to the photodetector via S-bends and/or tapers at ends of the optical waveguides. A width of the photodetector on sides that are coupled to the optical waveguides may be wider than a width of the optical waveguides coupled to the sides. Optical signals may be mixed with local oscillator signals using the multi-port waveguide photodetector.

Integrated coherent receiver having a geometric arrangement for improved device efficiency

Disclosed herein is a monolithically integrated coherent receiver chip which has a geometric arrangement of the on-chip components that significantly improves the performance and the manufacturability of a coherent receiver module for Dual Polarization Quadrature Phase Shift Keyed (DP-QPSK) applications and other optical coherent detection systems. The coherent receiver chip comprises two optical hybrids, three optical inputs and eight electrical outputs with the two optical hybrids oriented perpendicular to the optical inputs and the electrical outputs which are widely spaced and arranged in a co-linear fashion that simplifies module design and assembly. The proposed geometric arrangement also replaces any optical waveguide crossings with vertical electrical-optical crossings and includes electrical transmissions which are used to minimize channel skew. The proposed configuration also has the additional benefit of improved thermal management by separating the module's trans-impedance amplifiers.

Method and device for measuring alignment of an optical surface of a lens block

An alignment feature formed in a lens block during manufacturing has a precise spatial relationship to an optical surface of the lens block such that precise alignment of the alignment feature within the lens block ensures precise alignment of the optical surface within the lens block. Precise alignment of the alignment feature within the lens block is readily assessable whereas precise alignment of the optical surface within the lens block is not. A determination is made as to whether the optical surface is aligned within the lens block by determining whether the alignment feature is aligned within the lens block, and if not, the extent of any misalignment. The extent of misalignment may then be used to adjust the manufacturing process to eliminate the alignment error.
