Wavelength flexibility through variable-period poling of optical fiber
A fiber laser system includes a high power pump laser, an optical fiber that is aligned to receive output from the high power pump laser. The fiber laser system includes a first pair of orthogonally opposed, periodic electrode structures longitudinally aligned on opposite first and second sides of the optical fiber. The fiber laser system includes a controller that is communicatively coupled to the first pair of periodic electrode structures. The controller performs variable period poling of the first pair of periodic electrode structures to achieve quasi-phase matching (QPM).
FREQUENCY-CONVERSION OF AN OPTICAL FREQUENCY COMB
The invention relates to a method for generating frequency converted laser radiation. It is an object of the invention to provide a method that enables the generation of a frequency converted optical frequency comb and that is easy to implement at low cost. It is a further object to enable adjustment of the center frequency and the mode spacing in a frequency converted optical frequency comb. The method of the invention comprises the following steps: generating pump laser radiation with a spectrum containing a plurality of equidistant spectral lines; passing the pump laser radiation through the non-linear medium of a singly resonant, single-frequency optical parametric oscillator, wherein the pump laser radiation is continuous wave or pulsed, wherein the pulse duration in the latter case is longer than the time the optical parametric oscillation requires to reach its steady state; and coupling out the non-resonant idler or signal laser radiation from the optical parametric oscillator as usable frequency converted laser radiation. Moreover, the invention relates to a laser device for carrying out the method of the invention.
APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR SHIFTING A FREQUENCY OF AN OPTICAL SIGNAL
A system and method for applying a time-varying phase shift to an optical signal is described. Such a phase shift results in a frequency shift of the optical signal, which can be useful for instance in sensing applications. The design uses cross phase modulation (XPM) in a nonlinear medium such as optical fiber. The pump producing the XPM experiences a change in energy along the medium, for instance due to loss. The pump and signal have mismatched group velocities such that they walk-off each other in time, and the pump pulse repetition rate is chosen so that it has a specific relationship with respect to the walk-off. The design is compatible with very low signal loss and does not require high fidelity electrical control signals. It is capable of high-efficiency one-directional serrodyne frequency shifts, as well as producing symmetric frequency shifts. It can also be made polarization independent.

DISPLAY SYSTEM WITH TUNABLE WAVELENGTH CONVERSION IN A NANOPHOTONIC PERIODICALLY POLED LITHIUM NIOBATE WAVEGUIDE
According to examples, a tunable visible light source may include a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguide and a control mechanism to optimize the phase-matching of the PPLN waveguide in response to an input signal with a varied wavelength. The control mechanism may include an electro-optic (EO) tuning mechanism, a microheater-based thermo-optic (TO) control mechanism, and/or an acousto-optic (AO) control mechanism. The control mechanisms may, respectively, generate an electric field, heat, or an acoustic wave to affect a change in refractive index of the PPLN waveguide and thereby optimize the conversion efficiency to maximize the output power of the output wavelength of the PPLN waveguide as the input wavelength is tuned.
