A digital printing process that applies a liquid radiation curable primer containing 20 to 80% of at least one acrylate functional monomer and 20 to 60% of at least one thermoplastic polyurethane polymer onto a surface of a flat web or sheet substrate; cures the primer by UV or EB irradiation to give a dry, tack-free surface; and then uses a digital printing press that uses a liquid-toner-based electrographic imaging process with a press blanket to transfer a printed image from the press blanket to the cured-primer coated substrate. The resulting printed web or sheet may have a dry, tack-free semi-interpenetrating polymer network layer adjacent the printed image.

Flexible printed material

A method of forming a flexible printed material is described. The method comprises applying a layer of primer onto a flexible substrate; electrostatically printing onto the layer of primer a liquid electrostatic ink composition; applying a curable overprint varnish composition onto the printed electrostatic ink composition and curing the overprint varnish composition using electron beam irradiation. The curable overprint varnish composition comprises an ethylenically unsaturated monomer, an ethylenically unsaturated oligomer, or mixtures thereof, and less than 10 wt. % of a cross-linking additive based on the total weight of the curable overprint varnish composition. A flexible package comprising the flexible printed material is also described.

Printing methods

A method for determining coat weight of a printed transparent electrophotographic composition is described, in which a calibration composition is added to a transparent liquid electrophotographic composition to produce a test composition, the calibration composition comprising a carrier liquid, a polymer resin, and at least 5 wt. % of an optical brightening agent based on the total solids content of the calibration composition. The test composition is electrophotographically printed onto a test substrate to produce the printed transparent electrophotographic ink composition; the fluorescence of the printed transparent electrophotographic composition is measured; and the coat weight of the printed transparent electrophotographic composition is determine based on the fluorescence of the printed transparent electrophotographic composition.

PRINTING SYSTEMS

The present disclosure is drawn to printing systems. In one example, a printing system can include a pretreatment head, an inkjet print head, and a post-treatment head. The pretreatment head can include a first plasma generator to apply a plasma treatment to a media substrate. The inkjet print head can be positioned with respect to the pretreatment head to form a printed image on the media substrate after the plasma treatment. The post-treatment head can include a second plasma generator positioned with respect to the inkjet print head to treat the printed image on the media substrate.

Composite coating and substrate used in liquid electrophotographic printing and method

A digital-printing substrate and method of improving adhesion of a substrate to an liquid electrophotographic (LEP) ink in LEP printing both employ a composite coating. The composite coating includes from 4.5% to 9.5% by weight of a mineral pigment and from 0.5% to 2% by weight of an organic binder uniformly dispersed in water. The mineral pigment has a particle size less than 1 micron. The organic binder comprises a hydroxylated polymer having an average molecular weight greater than 50,000. A weight percentage of hydroxyl groups in the hydroxylated polymer is equal to or greater than a weight percentage of acidic groups in an LEP ink. The composite coating enhances adhesion of the LEP ink to the substrate comprising the composite coating dried on a surface of the substrate.
