The fixing section includes first and second rotating members, and state-changes between a second contact state and a second separate state by the driving force. The controller controls the motor and the switching mechanism and thereby causes part or all of a first period, in which the fixing section state-changes from the second separate state to the second contact state, and part or all of a second period, in which the image formation-transfer section state-changes from the first separate state to the first contact state, to overlap each other.

An image forming apparatus includes a first image forming unit and a second image forming unit to form first toner images and second toner images, respectively, of different colors, a transfer member to transferred received toner images to a position, and a contact/separation unit to switch between first and second modes. Where a first, second, and third image are formed in order on sheets, the mode is switched from the first to the second mode after the transfer member receives the first image to the transfer member and before formation of the second image by the first image forming unit is started if a first image length in a conveyance direction is smaller than a predetermined length. After the sheet receives the first image, the contact/separation unit switches the mode from the first to the second mode if the first image length is greater than the predetermined length.

In a second mode, in which an image is formed with two or more image forming units of the image forming units, and when all the first-transfer rollers are located at the transfer positions, the displacement mechanism adjusts the passing position of the intermediate transfer belt by bringing a portion of the rotating cam into contact with the moving unit to move the moving unit and thus displacing one of the upstream-side and downstream-side retention rollers.

An image forming apparatus includes a first image forming unit and a second image forming unit to form first toner images and second toner images, respectively, of different colors, a transfer member to transferred received toner images to a position, and a contact/separation unit to switch between first and second modes. Where a first, second, and third image are formed in order on sheets, the mode is switched from the first to the second mode after the transfer member receives the first image to the transfer member and before formation of the second image by the first image forming unit is started if a first image length in a conveyance direction is smaller than a predetermined length. After the sheet receives the first image, the contact/separation unit switches the mode from the first to the second mode if the first image length is greater than the predetermined length.

If an image forming retry involving cleaning a transfer portion due to a recording medium conveyance delay in the third mode is to be performed, a controller changes over the third mode to the second mode without stopping rotation of the second drum to perform image formation on a recording medium fed by restart of a feeding operation.
