An image forming apparatus includes: a first developing roller movable between a first contact position and a first separated position; a second developing roller movable between a second contact position and a second separated position; and a controller. When a sheet interval is shorter than a first interval and is longer than or equal to a second interval, the controller maintains the first developing roller at the first contact position even after the completion of its development for a preceding sheet, controls the first developing roller to start development for a subsequent sheet, moves the second developing roller to the second separated position after the completion of its development for the preceding sheet, moves the second developing roller again to the second contact position, and controls the second developing roller to start development for the subsequent sheet after the second developing roller is moved again to the second contact position.

An image forming apparatus includes: a first gear train including a first clutch; a second gear train including a second clutch; a third gear train including a third clutch; a fourth gear train including a fourth clutch; a motor including an output shaft; an output gear rotatable with the output shaft; a fifth gear train connected to the first and second clutches; and a sixth gear train connected to the third and fourth clutches. The first clutch engages transmission of a driving force to a first developing unit, the second clutch engages transmission of a driving force to a second developing unit, the third clutch engages transmission of a driving force to a third developing unit, and the fourth clutch engages transmission of a driving force to a fourth developing unit. The fifth and sixth gear trains are connected to the output gear independently from each other.

An image forming system includes: a first image forming apparatus including a first fixer that fixes an image formed on a recording medium to the recording medium; a second image forming apparatus including a second fixer that fixes an image formed on the recording medium to the recording medium, the second image forming apparatus being connected to a downstream side of the first image forming apparatus in a transport direction of the recording medium; and a hardware processor that determines first transport control content in which the recording medium is transported in the first image forming apparatus and the second image forming apparatus, and sets second transport control content so that the recording medium that has been processed by the first fixer is processed in a different position by the second fixer.

A dithering process for the controller's controlling of the exposure unit is different depending on whether the operation is in the first mode or the second mode, and in at least a part of the input image data, the density of the toner image formed by the dithering process in the first mode is higher than the density of the toner image formed by the dithering process in the second mode.
LEAD EDGE OFFSET CORRECTION FOR INTERMEDIATE TRANSFER DRUM IMAGING
An apparatus and method for compensating for variation of the image placement for each color station in an intermediate transfer drum system. A sensor detects the image placed by the previous station and triggers the imaging on the drum such that it properly registered to the previous image. However, the variation of the drum’s radius results in runout which creates an error in the image placement, since the surface drum travel will be larger or smaller than expected. The method to correct for a lead edge offset for radial runout involves dividing the drum into regions and calculating an offset center of each region. As the drum transitions from region to region the offset value is updated to determine when to start imaging for proper placement on the sheet. The offset can be derived from the image runout to find the distance traveled from the transfer point or can be measured directly from color-to-color registration variation.
Glossiness detector, image forming apparatus, and sheet conveyance system
A glossiness detector includes a glossiness sensor, a glossiness corrector, and a reference plate. The glossiness corrector corrects glossiness detected by the glossiness sensor. The reference plate is used for correction processing of the glossiness sensor. Then, the glossiness corrector acquires a glossy reflection profile of the reference plate that has been detected in advance. The glossiness corrector corrects the glossiness according to the reference plate on the basis of the glossy reflection profile and a gloss distribution of the reference plate that has been detected by the glossiness sensor.

In an image forming operation, a potential difference between a first transfer voltage and a potential at a first transfer portion, which is formed on a first image bearing member and does not form the image, is greater than a potential difference between a second transfer voltage and a potential at a second transfer portion, which is formed on a second image bearing member and does not form an image.

There is provided image forming apparatus including: photosensitive member; developing roller configured to supply a developer to the photosensitive member; belt to which a developer image is to be transferred from the photosensitive member; sensor; and controller configured to execute a developing bias correcting process for correcting a developing bias to be applied to the developing roller. The developing bias correcting process includes: a setting process for setting testing biases, all of the testing biases being smaller than an old developing bias; a forming process for forming developer images on the belt by using the testing biases set in the setting process; a detecting process for detecting densities of the developer images formed in the forming process by the sensor; and a calculating process for calculating the developing bias based on the densities of the developer images detected in the detecting process.
