An image forming apparatus employing an electrophotographic image forming unit and an inkjet image forming unit, thereby being capable of printing an image on each of a front surface and the back surface of a recording medium.

DUPLEX PRINTING

A duplex printing system and method of configuring the same are described. In examples, an image, such as a test pattern, on one side of a print substrate is printed to be out of phase with an image, such as a test pattern, on the other side of the print substrate. This is achieved by adjusting a configuration of a print buffer that is located between first and second print engines of the duplex printing system. In particular examples, a length of a web within the print buffer is controlled such that the images are out of phase.

An image forming system includes a first device and a second device that are connected in series. The first device can continuously discharge a paper. The second device is blocked from information on a paper conveyance in the first device. The second device, based on printing setting information and a time at which the first paper passes the predetermined position, sets a printing cycle, and based on a time at which the second paper passes the predetermined position, calculates a delay time from a printing cycle of the second paper. The second device stops a conveyance of the second paper that is conveyed to the paper processor, and in accordance with the delay time, controls resuming of the stopped conveyance of the second paper.

System and method for adaptively switching a print mode from duplex to simplex. In one embodiment, a processor monitors memory to detect a duplex page followed by multiple contiguous simplex pages. The processor estimates a first time for the duplex sheet corresponding to the duplex page to traverse a duplex media path for switching from a duplex print mode to a simplex print mode. The processor also estimates a second time for simplex sheets corresponding to the multiple contiguous simplex pages to traverse the simplex media path in the simplex print mode, and estimates a third time for the simplex sheets to traverse the duplex media path in the duplex print mode. If the third time is less than a sum of the first time and the second time, the processor modifies the instructions to print the multiple contiguous simplex pages in the duplex print mode.
