An image forming apparatus includes an optical sensor configured to detect an image formed on an intermediate transfer belt. The optical sensor includes a first light emitting diode (LED), a second LED, a first photodiode (PD), and a second PD on a substrate. The first PD is arranged at a position at which specularly reflected light of light emitted from the first LED can be received, and scattered reflected light of light emitted from the second LED can be received. The second PD is arranged at a position at which scattered reflected light of light emitted from the second LED can be received. A light receiving surface of the first PD and a light receiving surface of the second PD are formed at different angles. The light receiving surface of the first PD has an area that is smaller than an area of the light receiving surface of the second PD.

An edge position detecting apparatus includes a light emitting device, a detecting device, and a calculating circuit. The light emitting device includes a plurality of light sources with different emission wavelengths. The light emitting device irradiates a conveyed object with linear light along a width direction of the conveyed object, the width direction being perpendicular to a conveying direction of the conveyed object. The detecting device detects, at a plurality of positions in the width direction of the conveyed object, intensity of reflected light of light emitted by the light emitting device. The calculating circuit calculates, based on a detection result of the detecting device, a position of an edge of the conveyed object in the width direction.

According to one embodiment, an image forming apparatus includes: a registration roller; a motor configured to drive the roller; and a controller configured to control the motor. The roller is disposed at a first position on a conveyance path of paper on which an image is to be formed, and sends out the paper toward a second position on the conveyance path. The second position is downstream from the first position on the conveyance path and is an image transfer position on the paper. The controller controls the motor by using both speed control and position control when the leading end of the paper is at a position from the first position to the second position, and controls the motor by using only the speed control when the leading end of the paper reaches the second position.

When a first recording medium is conveyed, the shaft member is arranged at the first position such that a distance between the shaft member and the first conveyance guide is a predetermined distance. When a second recording medium is conveyed, the shaft member is arranged at the second position such that the distance between the shaft member and the first conveyance guide is increased.

An image forming apparatus includes a print engine, a sheet transportation unit, a line sensor, and a control unit. The print engine is configured to physically print an image to be printed on a print sheet. The sheet transportation unit is configured to transport the print sheet. The line sensor is arranged along a direction perpendicular to a transportation direction of the print sheet, and configured to detect positions of both end edges of the print sheet. The control unit is configured to (a) determine as a sheet center actual position a center position of the print sheet on the basis of the detected positions of both end edges of the print sheet, and (b) adjust a center position of the image to be printed so as to cause the center position of the image to be printed to agree with the sheet center actual position.
