Holographic MEMS operated optical projectors

A method forms an image with a reconfigurable array of mirrors. The method includes configuring the array by translating some of the mirrors such that distances of the mirrors of the array from a reference plane have a non-uniform spatial distribution. The method includes illuminating the configured array with a coherent light beam such that part of the light beam is reflected off the array and is projected on a planar viewing screen.

Combined light modulation device for tracking users

For comfortable viewing of a 3-D scene at various viewing angles, a display having a large tracking range for a variable viewer distance is required. A controllable light-influencing element deflects light in coarse steps in a viewer range. Within said steps, the light is deflected by a further controllable light-influencing element continuously or with fine gradation. The light modulation device is suitable in holographic or autostereoscopic displays for guiding the visibility ranges of the image information to be displayed so as to follow the eyes of the viewers.

A method and system are disclosed for using circular symmetry to eliminate the angle limitations of an optical axis in a scanned aperture holography system. A Room-sized Holography System may be a scanned aperture holographic video display and may comprise a rotating platform, a telescope comprising a first lens and a second lens, and scanners at the Fourier plane where the focal length of the first lens and the second lens meet. The platform may rotate around an axis aligned with a spatial light modulator. When the platform rotates, the scanners rotate, thereby de-rotating a SAW image. The second lens may be a spherical reflective surface for redirecting light from the spatial light modulator, having passed through the first lens and reflected off a mirror-scanner, toward a user's eyes. The user may be on a chair above the spatial light modulator, wherein the chair is configured to rotate with the spatial light modulator.

A phase distribution is calculated such that modulated light has a predetermined intensity distribution on a target plane and displayed on a phase modulation plane, readout light enters the phase modulation plane so as to generate the modulated light. When calculating the phase distribution, a region on the phase modulation plane is divided into N regions A.sub.1 . . . A.sub.N, with sizes set such that integration values of an intensity distribution in the regions are equal to each other. Further, a region on the target plane is divided into N regions B.sub.1 . . . B.sub.N, with sizes set such that integration values of an intensity distribution in the regions are equal to each other. The phase distribution is calculated by obtaining an optical path length from the region A.sub.n to the region B.sub.n, and determining the phase of the region A.sub.n based on the optical path length.
