There is disclosed herein a waveguide including an optical slab and an optical wedge. The optical slab has a first refractive index, n.sub.1>1. The optical slab includes: a pair of opposing surfaces and an input port. The pair of opposing surfaces are arranged in a parallel configuration. The input port is arranged to receive light into the optical slab at an angle such that the light is guided between the first and second opposing surfaces. The optical wedge has a second refractive index, n.sub.2, wherein 1<n.sub.2<n.sub.1. The optical wedge includes a pair of opposing surfaces arranged in a wedge configuration. A first surface of the optical wedge abuts the second surface of the optical slab to form an interface. The angle of the wedge allows light received at the interface to escape through the second surface of the optical wedge such that the exit pupil of the waveguide is expanded.

Disclosed in the present invention is a floating hologram system. The floating hologram system includes a diffuser configured to form a projection image using light beams transmitted from an image transmitter and diffuse the formed image, and a holographic optical element on which the image diffused from the diffuser is incident and which generates a virtual image floating at a position a predetermined distance therefrom and has a convex lens characteristic. A distance between the diffuser and the holographic optical element is determined based on a focal length of the holographic optical element and a distance from the holographic optical element to the virtual image.

The present invention is directed to a system, method and apparatus for augmented viewing of real world objects. The invention is thus generally directed to the field of electronic devices, more specifically, electronic devices which project electronic virtual reality displays including, but not limited to, three dimensional holographic images. The invention deploys a cellular phone equipped with a camera and an external framework surrounding the phone. The external framework supports a projector camera projecting a three dimensional holographic image. By such design, either the cellular phone camera or the projection camera can obtain image of an external object and its coordinates in space, then project three dimensional holographic image upon the real world object for artistic, educational and/or marketing purposes.

A plasma generator including: a femtosecond light source that generates a laser pulse beam; a processor that computes a computer generated hologram; a spatial light modulator that modifies the laser pulse beam in accordance with the computer generated hologram; a three dimensional scanner optically coupled to the spatial light modulator to direct the modified laser pulse beam to one or more focal points in air; and a lens that focuses the modified laser pulse beam. The modified laser pulse beam induces a light emission effect at a one or more focal points that can be visible, audible, and palpable.
