There is provided a holographic projector comprising a reflective liquid crystal display device. The reflective liquid crystal display device comprises a light-modulating layer between a first substrate and a second substrate substantially parallel to the first substrate. The light-modulating layer comprises planar-aligned nematic liquid crystals having positive dielectric anisotropy. The first substrate is substantially transparent and comprises a first alignment layer arranged to impart a first pre-tilt angle θ.sub.l on liquid crystals proximate the first substrate, wherein θ.sub.1>5°. The second substrate is substantially reflective and comprises a second alignment layer arranged to impart a second pre-tilt angle Θ.sub.2 on liquid crystals proximate the second substrate, wherein θ.sub.2>5°. The reflective liquid crystal display device further comprises a plurality of pixels defined on the light-modulating layer having a pixel repeat distance x, wherein x≤10 μm. The distance d between inside faces of the first substrate and second substrate satisfies 0.5 μm≤d≤3 μm, and the birefringence of the liquid crystal Δη≥0.20. The holographic projector further comprises a display driver arranged to drive the reflective liquid crystal display device to display a hologram by independently-driving each pixel at a respective modulation level selected from a plurality of modulation levels having a phase modulation value.

PROJECTOR WITH PHASE HOLOGRAM MODULATOR

A projection system includes: an illumination source configured to output illumination light; a phase light modulator (PLM) optically coupled to the illumination source, the PLM configured to: receive the illumination light; phase modulate the illumination light while displaying a phase hologram, to produce modulated light; and projection optics coupled to the PLM, the projection optics configured to receive the modulated light and to project an image responsive to the modulated light; wherein both a mean in intensity and a variance in intensity in bright regions of the projected image is greater than the mean intensity and the variance in intensity in dark regions of the projected image.

DISPERSION COMPENSATION

A method of dispersion compensation in an optical device is disclosed. The method may include identifying a first hologram grating vector of a grating medium of the optical device. The first hologram grating vector may correspond to a first wavelength of light. The method may include determining a probe hologram grating vector corresponding to a second wavelength of light different from the first wavelength of light. The method may also include determining a dispersion-compensated second hologram grating vector based at least in part on the probe hologram grating vector and the first hologram grating vector. A device for reflecting light is disclosed. The device may include a grating medium and a grating structure within the grating medium. The grating medium may include a dispersion compensated hologram.

The irradiation unit includes a light source for emitting a coherent light beam and a scanning device capable of adjusting a reflection angle of the coherent light beam emitted from the light source and that makes a reflected coherent light beam scan the hologram recording medium. The light source has light sources for emitting coherent light beams having different wavelength ranges. The hologram recording medium has a plurality of recording areas to be scanned with a plurality of coherent light beams reflected by the scanning device, respectively. Each of the plurality of recording areas has an interference fringe that diffracts a coherent light beam of the corresponding wavelength range.

A holographic projector having an optical path is described. The holographic projector comprises a first spatial light modulator arranged to display a first hologram, and a first light source. The first light source is arranged to illuminate the first spatial light modulator with light of a first wavelength such that a first holographic reconstruction corresponding to the first hologram is formed on a replay plane. The holographic projector further comprises a continuous block of transparent material. At least part of the optical path is formed through the continuous block of transparent material. The transparent material has a refractive index greater than air.

IMAGE DISPLAY DEVICE

An image display device of the present disclosure includes an image light generating device, a first, a second, a third, and a fourth optical unit. A first intermediate image is formed between the first and the third optical unit. A pupil is formed between the second and the fourth optical unit. A second intermediate image is formed between the third and the fourth optical unit. An exit pupil is formed at an opposite side of the fourth optical unit from the third optical unit. The image light generating device includes a first, a second, a third light emitting panel, and a color synthesis element. The color synthesis element is constituted of a cross dichroic prism including a first and a second dichroic film that intersect with each other. Each of the first and the second dichroic film does not have a polarization separation characteristic.
