Described here are deformable, monolithic, stabilization implants suitable for use within bone and between bones to fuse vertebral bodies, to repair herniated discs, or to repair spinal compression fractures. The implants are introduced into a chosen site at a first, smaller height and then plastically deformed to achieve a second, but unique, pre-selected, larger height. Variations of the device provide one or more specific larger heights. The devices are suitable as intervertebral spinal fusion implants for the immobilization of adjacent vertebral bodies. Methods of and instruments for deployment of the implants are also described. Also described are variations of the device suitable as sizing instruments.

An intervertebral disk prostheses for the total replacement of an intervertebral disk of the lumbar and cervical spine has an upper plate having upwardly projecting formations anchoring it to an upper vertebra on its upper face and a concavity on its inner face surrounded by an edge. A lower plate is provided with downwardly projecting formations anchoring it to a lower vertebra on its lower face and a flat inner face surrounding a groove extending front-to-back. A middle plate between the upper and lower plate has on its upper face a convexity that is identically or differently shaped to the concavity on the inner face of the upper plate and a ridge extending front-to-back surrounded by a flat lower face of the middle plate. The ridge has flanks and the groove houses the ridge of the middle plate and permits the ridge to slide front-to-back in the groove.

The columns are not formed at the first height but are operative upon expansion of the body to the second height to form load-bearing columns along the height axis between the upper and lower bone contact structures.

A modular anterior lumbar interbody fusion device comprises a monolithic interbody fusion cage and a modular plate resiliently attached thereto. The cage includes an open architecture with top and bottom cross members and a pair of opposing arms projecting from respective side structures of the cage to define a pocket at the cage anterior end. The modular plate is received in the pocket and attached to the cage by resilient latches. The plate lies fully within the profile of the cage with the resilient latches lying fully within the thickness of the plate. The plate provides a structure to close the anterior portion of the modular cage after introduction of bone graft material while allowing for use with integrated fixation. Attachment features between the monolithic cage and modular plate are universal allowing for selection of various modular device configurations with minimal components.

An article may include a body having a matrix of a first hardness having a plurality of particles of a second hardness embedded in the matrix in fixed locations, the second hardness being harder than the first hardness, and the matrix having an external wear surface with a portion of the particles being proximal to or exposed at the external wear surface. The matrix with the particles may improve the life and durability of the article.

The first tibial component surface is for contacting a proximal surface of the tibia that is substantially uncut subchondral bone. At least a portion of the first tibial component surface is a mirror image of the proximal tibial surface. The second tibial component surface articulates with the second femoral component surface.
