In some examples, a system and method for activating a payment instrument. The method includes leveraging an activation feature associated with a payment instrument. The representation, obtained by a sensor, of the activation feature is received by the payment processing system. The payment processing system compares the representation of the activation feature with stored activation features corresponding to a user associated with the payment instrument. If the representation matches a user-associated activation feature, the payment processing system activates the payment instrument, wherein activating further includes granting the recipient access to a predetermined amount of funds through the activated payment instrument.

Portable device with local verification data

Embodiments of the disclosure are directed to systems and methods in which verification data is written to a portable device and used to complete a transaction. The system may identify a number of trusted third-party entities computers capable of providing verification data associated with a particular user. The system may generate requests to each of the trusted third-party computers for that verification data. Upon receiving responses, the system may select an appropriate verification data from the responses received from those trusted third-party computers. The verification data is then written to a portable device, which is provided to a user with which it is associated. Once provided, the portable device may be used in a transaction conducted at a resource provider and the verification data may be caused to be displayed on a display operated by the resource provider.

A method includes receiving a request for enrollment from a user at a wallet service provider (WSP) computer, and enrolling the user in the WSP computer. A message is transmitted to the user to query the user about accepting payment card account system transactions. A response to the message, from the user, is received in the WSP computer. The WSP computer downloads, to a device operated by the user, a list of acquirer financial institutions. The WSP computer receives, from the device operated by the user, an indication that the user has selected one of the acquirer financial institutions from the list. An application program supplied by the selected acquirer financial institution is downloaded to the device operated by the user.

Personalized gift cards—post-transaction communication

Techniques and arrangements for personalizing gift cards based, in part, on exchanging personalized messages between a customer that buys a gift card and a customer that receives and uses the gift card. A point-of-sale (POS) device of a merchant may receive a personalized message from the customer buying the gift card at the time of the purchase. The POS device may then present the personalized message to the customer receiving the gift card when the customer uses the gift card to satisfy a cost of a transaction between the merchant and the customer. During or after the transaction, the POS device may further receive feedback from the recipient customer of the gift card. The POS device may then send the feedback to the customer that originally bought the gift card.

A method of providing a digital gift card to a beneficiary, the method including, in one or more electronic processing devices: receiving, from a digital wallet of an individual, a request to create a digital gift card including information indicative of at least one of: an occasion associated with the digital gift card and beneficiary information associated with the beneficiary; determining, based on at least one of the occasion and the beneficiary information, a plurality of gift card offers offered by respective merchants; presenting, from the digital wallet, the plurality of gift card offers; receiving, from the digital wallet, an indication of a selected gift card offer; processing a payment from the digital wallet to the merchant offering the selected gift card offer; and sending a digital gift card notification for the selected gift card offer to the beneficiary, to thereby allow the beneficiary to obtain and redeem it.
