Ranging objects external to an aircraft using multi-camera triangulation

Apparatus and associated methods relate to ranging an object nearby an aircraft by triangulation using two simultaneously-captured images of the object. The two images are simultaneously captured from two distinct vantage points on the aircraft. Because the two images are captured from distinct vantage points, the object can be imaged at different pixel-coordinate locations in the two images. The two images are correlated with one another so as to determine the pixel-coordinate locations corresponding to the object. Range to the object is calculated based on the determined pixel-coordinate locations and the two vantage points from which the two images are captured. Only a subset of each image is used for the correlation. The subset used for correlation includes pixel data from pixels upon which spatially-patterned light that is projected onto the object by a light projector and reflected by the object.

Holographic in-field illuminator

An eye-tracking system includes a holographic illuminator and a detector. The holographic illuminator includes a light source configured to provide light and a holographic medium optically coupled with the light source. The holographic medium is configured to receive the light provided from the light source and concurrently project a plurality of separate light patterns toward an eye. The detector is configured to detect a reflection of at least a subset of the plurality of separate light patterns, reflected off the eye, for determining a location of a pupil of the eye. Also disclosed is a method for determining a location of a pupil of an eye with the eye-tracking system that includes the holographic illuminator.

STRUCTURED LIGHT ILLUMINATORS INCLUDING A CHIEF RAY CORRECTOR OPTICAL ELEMENT

The present disclosure describes techniques to improve the resolution and reduce the distortion of structured light projection in miniature wide-angle VCSEL array projection modules used for 3D imaging and gesture recognition. The projector module includes a chief ray corrector optical element, which directs the VCSEL beams along the projector lens chief ray paths. The VCSEL structured illumination projector using the chief ray optical element corrector can create a high resolution, low distortion structured light pattern over an extended distance range greater that the projector lens image focal range. The corrector element is placed close to the VCSEL array. The corrector element can be implemented in various ways including, for example, a refractive lens, diffractive lens or microlens array, depending on the specific application requirements and optical configurations.

Apparatus and methods for navigation of a robotic device configured to operate in an environment comprising objects and/or persons. Location of objects and/or persons may change prior and/or during operation of the robot. In one embodiment, a bistatic sensor comprises a transmitter and a receiver. The receiver may be spatially displaced from the transmitter. The transmitter may project a pattern on a surface in the direction of robot movement. In one variant, the pattern comprises an encoded portion and an information portion. The information portion may be used to communicate information related to robot movement to one or more persons. The encoded portion may be used to determine presence of one or more object in the path of the robot. The receiver may sample a reflected pattern and compare it with the transmitted pattern. Based on a similarity measure breaching a threshold, indication of object present may be produced.

A user is guided to move a device equipped with an illuminator and a camera with respect to a document whose genuineness is to be assessed. The motion includes changing the distance between the device and the document by moving the device or moving the document. Imagery of the document is captured during the movement and analyzed to determine a likelihood that the document includes features indicative of genuineness, such as a hologram, an original photograph, and other regions matching those of a genuine document. The analysis may include identifying regions exhibiting large changes in appearance over relatively small distance changes which characterize holograms, and obtaining the spatial extent of document features.
