Technical fallback infrastructure

In some examples, methods and systems may institute technical fallback by determining, by a payment processing system, and based on analysis of the communication status indicator and the data obtained when a magnetic stripe of the payment object is introduced in magnetic stripe object reader, whether the payment object was swiped while an EMV object reader was communicatively coupled to the POS terminal. If the magnetic stripe of the payment object was swiped while the EMV object reader was connected to the POS terminal, the payment processing system extracts a transaction count indicating a number of times the customer has attempted to insert a chip of the payment object into the EMV object reader prior to swiping magstripe. By comparing the transaction count with a threshold count, the payment processing system authorizes the payment transaction as a technical fallback transaction if the transaction count is greater than the threshold count.

TRANSACTION DEVICE

A transaction device includes an input section, a determination unit, a recording section, and a transaction processor. The input section includes plural keys. The determination unit monitors for one out of a simultaneous-pressing state in which plural of the keys are pressed at the same time or an extended-pressing state in which one of the keys is pressed continuously for a predetermined duration or longer, and determines that improper input has been performed in cases in which either a simultaneous-pressing state or an extended-pressing state has been detected. The recording section records setting information indicating processing contents for when the determination unit has determined that improper input has been performed. The transaction processor performs transaction processing with a customer using the input section, and performs an action according to setting information recorded in the recording section when the determination unit has determined that improper input has been performed.

Method and apparatus for providing authentication using policy-controlled authentication articles and techniques

A method and apparatus provides first or second factor authentication by providing selectability of a plurality of second factor authentication policies associated with a second factor authentication article. The first or second factor authentication article includes authentication information, such as a plurality of data elements in different cells or locations on the authentication article, which can be located by using corresponding location information. The method and apparatus provides second factor authentication based on the first or second factor authentication article by enforcing at least one of the plurality of selected authentication policies.

Physiological response pin entry

Methods and systems are provided for facilitating the secure entry of a user's PIN for electronic transactions such as merchant checkout, payment authorization, or access authorization. A physiological response of the user can indicate which one of a random sequence of numbers is a number of the user's PIN. For example, the user can blink, wink, or make a subtle facial movement to provide the indication.

Using a secondary identifier to select a data set

Systems and methods are configured to manage data sets associated with multiple transaction devices. The first and second data sets are associated with first and second owners, respectively, and are configured to be stored independent of each other The transaction devices user may be permitted to select at least one of the multiple data sets for transaction completion using a secondary identifier indicia. Where the user selects multiple accounts for transaction completion, the user may be permitted to allocate portions of a transaction to the selected transaction accounts from multiple transaction devices.
