A device, for grasping a limp body, such as a paraplegic or a quadriplegic patient (19), and transferring the body to another location or moving it into a different position, comprises two pivotally connected sections (12,13), one positioned to grasp the torso portion (18), the other the pelvic one (17). The sections can be kept in line with each other or pivoted toward each other to place the patient in a seated position. Each section comprises an upper frame (14) from the opposite longitudinal edges of which extends a pair of articulated grasping members positioned to move astride the torso or pelvis of the patient. The members include series of transversal cantles which can be directed to curl inwardly toward each other and securely enwrap and grab the load. The frame and the supported patient can then be hoisted, moved and deposited into a supine or seating position. Each member includes a series of successively hinged segments tilted by pulling cables.

An apparatus for lifting and moving a patient including a cart assembly with at least one drive wheel assembly secured thereto, a carriage assembly that is rotatably secured to the cart assembly, the carriage assembly including a lift assembly with a support arm, a patient support device operably secured to the support arm, and a counterweight assembly, the counterweight being movable along a longitudinal axis of the carriage assembly.

A chair configured to movably couple to parallel guide rails of a frame includes a support bar having a first end and an opposing second end. A transverse cross-member is coupled to the first end of the support bar. The transverse cross-member has a first side portion and an opposing second side portion. A first support assembly is coupled to the first side portion of the transverse cross-member. The first support assembly is configured to removably couple to a first guide rail of the parallel guide rails. A second support assembly is coupled to the second side portion of the transverse cross-member. Patient handling devices for transporting patients in health care settings are disclosed herein. The patient handling devices may include a support member and a torso support member. The patient handling device includes at least one articulating joint that is coupled to the support member and the torso support member. The articulating joint is selectable to arrest or allow articulation of the respective torso support member or the lower extremities support member relative to the support member through a variety of orientations.

An improved wheelchair lift-transfer device provides capabilities for a patient or caregiver to independently control the wheelchair and lift functions to elevate and move about safely. The compact lift-transfer device is readily usable to assist in transporting and lifting patients from various locations including wheelchairs, beds and chairs. Further, the lift-transfer device is also collapsible for storage and transport.

A hoist apparatus for use with a hoist for lifting a load is described. The hoist apparatus includes an elongate load bearing member having a longitudinal axis and at least two support points spaced apart along the longitudinal axis. An intermediate support member includes a hoist connection element for connecting the intermediate support member to a hoist, and at least first and second support point connection elements each connecting the intermediate support member to a respective support point of the elongate load bearing member. The first support point connection element is spaced a first distance from the hoist connection element, and the second support point connection element is spaced a second distance from the hoist connection element. Adjustment means adjusts at least one of the first and second distances so as to adjust the orientation of the longitudinal axis of the elongate load bearing member relative to the horizontal.

A surgical frame and a method for use thereof facilitates transfer of a patient from and to a surgical table/gurney. The surgical table includes a main beam positionable such that a surgical table/gurney with patient laying thereon can be positioned under the main beam.
