Tape head formed with high accuracy tape bearing surface length definition process
In one general embodiment, an apparatus includes a substrate, a thin film layer on the substrate having transducers therein, and a portion of a slot extending along the substrate, the portion of the slot defining a skiving edge. A length of a tape bearing surface between the thin film layer and the skiving edge is in a range of about 7 to about 30 microns. In another general embodiment, an apparatus includes a substrate, a thin film layer on the substrate having transducers therein, and a slot extending along the substrate, the slot defining a skiving edge. A length of a tape bearing surface between the thin film layer and the skiving edge is in a range of about 7 to about 30 microns.
Electrical isolation of read sensors during fabrication
A method includes depositing a plurality of layers over a substrate. The layers include read sensor layers and an electrically conductive layer substantially coplanar with the read sensor layers and substantially surrounding the read sensor layers. The electrically conductive layer is in contact with at least one of the read sensor layers. The electrically conductive layer provides an electrical path between the at least one of the read sensor layers and ground. The method further includes forming an isolation structure around the read sensor layers by removing a portion of the electrically conductive layer substantially surrounding the read sensor layers. The isolation structure is substantially coplanar with the read sensor layers and substantially surrounds the read sensor layers. The isolation structure breaks the electrical path between the at least one of the read sensor layers and the ground.
SELECTABLE READERS FOR BETTER PERFORMANCE
A method of forming a read head. The method includes forming first and second read sensors that are substantially trapezoidal in shape. A first read measurement is performed on a storage medium using the first read sensor. A second read measurement is performed on the storage medium using the second read sensor. Based on a comparison of the first and second read measurements to a predetermined quantity, either the first read sensor or the second read sensor is selected to be operational in a data storage device.
High accuracy tape bearing surface length definition process for tape head fabrication
In one general embodiment, a method includes forming a slot on a tape bearing surface of at least a chip having a thin film layer with a plurality of transducers therein, the slot defining a skiving edge. A second operation is performed on the tape bearing surface of at least the chip for removing a portion of the chip positioned on an opposite side of the slot as the transducers.
ELECTRONIC LAPPING GUIDE WITH A BACKSIDE EDGE DECOUPLED FROM A READ SENSOR BACKSIDE EDGE
A method of forming a magnetic head includes forming a read sensor stripe, depositing an electronic lapping guide (ELG) layer over the substrate in an ELG region, forming a backside edge of a read sensor by patterning the read sensor stripe in a first patterning step, forming a backside insulator layer and a rear bias magnetic material portion over the backside edge of the read sensor, forming a backside edge of an ELG by patterning the ELG layer in the ELG region in a second patterning step, simultaneously forming a front side edge of the read sensor and a front side edge of the ELG, and lapping the read sensor and the ELG to provide an air bearing surface of a read sensor. The physical stripe height offset can be determined for each flash field by correlating device conductance and ELG conductance.
Magnetic head, head gimbal assembly, hard disk drive, and method for processing magnetic head
The present disclosure discloses a magnetic head, a head gimbal assembly, a hard disk drive, and a method for processing a magnetic head. The method comprises irradiating at a fixed point proximal to the read/write part with a laser irradiation device until the read head and the write head are thermally expanded; orientating air bearing surfaces of a plurality of magnetic heads forming a magnetic strip toward a lapping surface of a lapping device after laser irradiation, holding the air bearing surfaces in place, lapping with the lapping device until the air bearing surfaces are coplanar; and disassembling the magnetic strip to obtain a lapped magnetic head. Through laser heating induced compensation, the heights of lapped read head and write head of the magnetic head meet their respective target values, ensuring the normal reading and writing of the storage medium of the magnetic disk.
STRIPE HEIGHT LAPPING CONTROL STRUCTURES FOR A MULTIPLE SENSOR ARRAY
A method and system provide a storage device. A plurality of read sensor stacks for each reader of the storage device are provided. The read sensor stacks are distributed along a down track direction and offset in a cross-track direction. A plurality of electronic lapping guides (ELGs) are provided for the read sensor stacks. The read sensor stacks are lapped. Lapping is terminated based on signal(s) from the ELG(s).

Actuator Tilt Interposer For Within-Row Lapping Mount Tool For Magnetic Recording Read-Write Heads
A lapping tool assembly includes a mount tool and an interposer structure interposed between actuators and the mount tool, where the interposer includes interposer pins reactively coupled with the actuators such that each interposer pin is configured to receive a translational force from a corresponding actuator and to transmit the force to a corresponding actuation pin of the mount tool. The interposer may include a zero z-axis shift flexure system, and/or a z-axis decoupling flexure system, and/or alignment features, for accurately transmitting the actuation forces to the mount tool, while inhibiting affecting other portions of the mount tool.
