Disk device
According to one embodiment, in a disk device, a first pattern cut out from a burst region at a certain servo track by a first length and with a first start position, does not match a second pattern cut out from the burst region at an adjacent servo track by the first length and with an arbitrary second start position including first timing. The burst region at the servo tracks includes a first burst pattern including a first magnetized portion where a first value is recorded and a second magnetized portion where a second value reverse to the first value in polarity is recorded, the second magnetized portion being adjacent to the first magnetized portion in a down track direction. A width of the first magnetized portion in the down track direction and a width of the second magnetized portion in the down track direction are different from each other.
Hard drive assembly with onboard tuned data memory
A hard disk assembly (HDAs) that include a tuning data memory at least including tuning data regarding the HDA. The HDAs may lack an internal disk controller, but rather may communicate the tuning data and/or other HDA-specific data (e.g., firmware, certification data, etc.) to a reader device comprising a disk controller. In this regard, the reader device may coordinate with the HDA once the tuning data is received to operate the HDA to perform TO commands in response to commands received at the reader device from a host. In turn, upon failure of an HDA, a new HDA may be swapped into place to communicate with the reader device. Because the HDAs may lack onboard disk controllers, the cost and complexity of each HDA may be reduced.

Magnetic disk device and head position correction method
According to one embodiment, a magnetic disk device includes a disk including a recording region including a servo sector, a head configured to write data to the disk and read data from the disk, and a controller configured to acquire a plurality of correction data for a repeatable runout of the recording region, the correction data respectively corresponding to a plurality of measurement positions set based on a first linearity error acquired by reading the servo sector, and to correct a position of the head based on the correction data.
Calibrating elevator actuator for disk drive
A data storage device is disclosed wherein an elevator actuator is controlled to move a head along an axial dimension toward a first disk surface of a first disk while processing a proximity signal generated by a proximity sensor. A first actuator position is detected when the actuator arm is proximate the first disk surface of the first disk based on the proximity signal.
Magnetic disk device and servo write method
According to one embodiment, a servo write method includes a head and a disk having a plurality of spiral servo patterns which are written radially in a first direction from a first area to a second area other than the first area at velocity that varies between the first area and the second area, the method including moving the head in a second direction opposite to the first direction to read each of the spiral servo patterns, measuring a plurality of time intervals at which each of the spiral servo patterns is read in the first area, and writing a plurality of servo patterns to the first area based on the time intervals.
DISK DRIVE WITH EFFICIENT HANDLING OF OFF-TRACK EVENTS DURING SEQUENTIAL WRITE
In a disk drive, when an off-track error occurs during a sequential disk access operation that spans multiple contiguous data tracks, efficient recovery is performed. In an embodiment, the disk access operation (e.g., reading from or writing to a disk) is attempted for all sectors of the sequential disk access operation. The disk access operation is then attempted again for sectors associated with any off-track errors that occurred during the disk access operation. In another embodiment, when an off-track error occurs during a sequential write operation in a shingled magnetic recording drive, the data originally targeted to be written to a first portion is written to a second portion of the data track that follows the first portion. Since no additional revolutions of the disk are needed for data associated with the sequential write operation to be written to the disk.
Data storage device coupling/decoupling actuator arm to/from an actuator
A data storage device is disclosed comprising a first head connected to a distal end of a first actuator arm, a second head connected to a distal end of second first actuator arm, a first coupler configured to couple the first actuator arm to an actuator, and a second coupler configured to couple the second actuator arm to the actuator. Access commands stored in a command queue are sorted into an execution order based on a selective coupling of the first and second actuator arms to the actuator. At least one of the access commands is executed based on the execution order in order to access at least one of a first and second disk surfaces using at least one of the first and second heads.
