An apparatus may include a first magnetic layer, a first exchange break layer formed on the first magnetic layer, a second magnetic layer formed on the first exchange break layer, a second exchange break layer formed on the second magnetic layer, and a third magnetic layer formed on the second exchange break layer. The first magnetic layer has a first magnetic anisotropy energy, H.sub.k1, the second magnetic layer has a second magnetic anisotropy energy, H.sub.k2, and the third magnetic layer has a third magnetic anisotropy energy, H.sub.k3. In some embodiments, H.sub.k1H.sub.k2 is less than H.sub.k2H.sub.k3. In some embodiments, the apparatus may be a perpendicular magnetic recording medium.

Perpendicular magnetic recording medium and magnetic storage apparatus

A perpendicular magnetic recording medium includes a perpendicular magnetic layer provided above a nonmagnetic substrate, and a protection layer provided on the perpendicular magnetic layer. The perpendicular magnetic layer has an hcp structure, and includes stacked layers having a (0002) crystal plane oriented parallel to a surface of the nonmagnetic substrate. An uppermost layer amongst the stacked layers includes polycrystal grains selected from a CoCr-base alloy, a CoPt-base alloy, a CoCrPt-base alloy, and a CoPtCr-base alloy. The protection layer makes contact with the uppermost layer of the perpendicular magnetic layer, and includes a single graphene layer or a graphene stack, and an amorphous carbon layer. The single graphene layer or the graphene stack is bonded in parallel to a (0002) crystal plane of the polycrystal grains.

According to one embodiment, a perpendicular magnetic recording medium includes an underlying layer with convexes arranged with 1 to 20 nm intervals, and a multilayered amorphous magnetic recording layer formed on the underlying layer. The multilayered amorphous magnetic recording layer includes a first amorphous magnetic recording layer with a plurality of magnetic grains each formed on a corresponding convex to be widened toward its tip and being separated from each other at least in the convex side, a nonmagnetic protective layer covering at least a part of a sidewall of the magnetic particle, and a second amorphous magnetic recording layer formed on the nonmagnetic protective layer.
