Reduced adjacent track erasure from write retry

Systems and methods are disclosed for reducing adjacent track erasure from write retry operations. In certain embodiments, an apparatus may comprise a circuit configured to abort a write operation while writing to a selected sector of a disc storage medium during a first revolution of the disc storage medium, and mark the selected sector as a temporary bad sector in a mapping table. The circuit may perform a write retry to continue the write operation starting at a next sector contiguously following the selected sector, without attempting to write the selected sector again, during a second revolution of the magnetic disc.

Read error recovery in a tape drive

A read error occurs when performing a read with a first read head. It is determined whether a second read head capable of use in a read-while-write operation runs within or outside of a first track. The second read head width defines a verified area on a track. If the second read head runs entirely within the first track, the first read head is positioned within the verified area. If the second read head runs partly outside of the first track, and a portion of the verified area within the first track is wider than the width of the first read head, the first read head is positioned within the portion of the verified area that is within the first track. If the portion is not wider, the first read head is positioned so that a side of the first read head is at a border the first track.

According to one embodiment, a magnetic disk device includes a disk, a head including a write head that writes data to the disk, and a first read head and a second read head. that read data from the disk, and a controller that, in reading a first track of a first region of the disk, positions a middle portion of the first read head and. the second read head at a first track center of the first track, and in reading a second track of a second region. of the disk different from the first region, positions any one of the first read head and the second read. bead at a second track center of the second track.

DATA STORAGE DEVICE EMPLOYING MULTI-LEVEL PARITY SECTORS FOR DATA RECOVERY PROCEDURE

A data storage device is disclosed comprising a head actuated over a disk. A first plurality of codewords and corresponding parity sector are generated, and a second plurality of codewords and corresponding parity sector are generated. The first and second plurality of codewords are written to the disk, and during a read of the first and second set of codewords, M codeword locations within the data track that are unrecoverable are saved, and N codeword locations out of the M codeword locations are selected based on a quality metric of the read. The N codewords are reread from the data track at the N codeword locations and reliability metrics associated with the N codewords are saved. The saved reliability metrics are updated using at least one of the first parity sector or the second parity sector.

Behavioral model for dynamic tension compensation

A tape drive-implemented method, according to one embodiment, includes: detecting a read error, and sending one or more instructions to perform a first re-read attempt on a portion of a magnetic tape corresponding to the read error. In response to determining that the first re-read attempt was unsuccessful, a range of tension settings is selected. A range of lateral offsets is also selected. Moreover, one or more instructions are sent to apply each unique combination of a tension setting from the range of tension settings and a lateral offset from the range of lateral offsets. For each of the unique combinations applied, one or more instructions are sent to perform a second phase re-read attempt on the portion of the magnetic tape corresponding to the read error. Furthermore, a determination is made as to whether the second phase re-read attempt was performed successfully for any of the unique combinations.

There are provided a memory system and an operating method thereof. A memory system includes: a plurality of storage regions, each including a plurality of memory cells; and a controller configured to provide a plurality of read retry sets, determine an applying order of the plurality of read retry sets based on characteristics of a read error occurred in a first storage region among the plurality of storage regions, and apply at least one of the read retry sets, based on the applying order, for a read retry operation performed on the first storage region.

Magnetic disk device configured to specify a range of previously written track that is to be overlapped during a write and verify data previously written in the specified range after the write

A magnetic disk device includes a magnetic disk and a control circuit. The magnetic disk includes a first area where writing is performed in a manner such that a newly written track partially overlaps a previously written adjacent track. The control circuit is configured to specify a range of a second track, which is to be overlapped as a result of writing first data to a first track, write second data written in the specified range of the second track to a saving area prior to writing the first data to the first track, write the first data to the first track, and verify the second data in the second track after writing the first data to the first track.

A storage device includes a recording medium, a first memory storing first data read from the recording medium, and a controller. The controller searches for read target data in the first data by executing a parity check on second data that is in the first data and starts at a first position, while executing the parity check, determining whether or not an interruption condition is satisfied, storing the second data in a second memory when the parity check completes without the interruption condition being satisfied and a result of a completed parity check satisfies a first condition, and executing a parity check on third data that is in the first data and starts at a second position, responsive to the interruption condition being satisfied and responsive to the result of the completed parity check not satisfying the first condition.

Sequential write management in a data storage system

Sequential write management in accordance with the present description permits impermissible write retries to be processed by a hard drive such as a Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) hard dive. In one embodiment, logic returns a successful write indication in response to a received retry write request operation without writing data to the SMR hard drive if the data of the received retry write operation has already been successfully written to the same location requested by the received retry write request operation. Conversely, a failure notice is returned if the data of the received retry write request operation has not been previously successfully written to the same location requested by the received retry write request operation. Other features and aspects may be realized, depending upon the particular application.
