WEAR MITIGATION SYSTEM FOR A MAGNETIC RECORDING MEDIUM
A wear mitigation system can be implemented in a data storage device. A data storage medium may be separated from a transducing head by an air bearing. A controller connected to the data storage medium and transducing head can be configured to reassign a physical address of the data storage medium from an unusable condition to a usable condition as a result of a self-healing of the data storage medium predicted by the controller.
LOCATION SELECTION BASED ON ADJACENT LOCATION ERRORS
Systems for location selection based on adjacent location errors are provided. One system includes a monitor module that monitors write numbers for one or more locations on a storage device, wherein a write number in the write numbers describes a number of times a storage device operation has been performed at a location in the one or more locations. Additionally, the system includes an identification module that identifies locations in one or more locations that are susceptible to adjacent location errors, wherein an adjacent location error is an error caused by a storage device operation associated with an adjacent location. Also, the system includes a selection module that selects a location in one or more locations for storing data based on monitored write numbers and identified locations.
MAGNETIC DISK DEVICE AND READ PROCESSING METHOD
According to one embodiment, a magnetic disk device includes a disk that includes a plurality of tracks, each track including a plurality of sectors for storing data, a head that is for writing data to the plurality of sectors and reading data from the plurality of sectors, and a controller. The controller is configured to determine that a first sector of the plurality of sectors is not able to be read and is a defective sector, determine that a second sector of the plurality of sectors is disposed along a line that extends through the first sector and a defective sector included in a first list of defective sectors, register the second sector in the first list of defective sectors, and reallocate an address corresponding to the second sector to a first alternative sector included on the disk.
DISK DEVICE AND MEDIA SCANNING METHOD
According to one embodiment, a disk device includes a disk, a head that performs data read/write processing on a recording region of the disk, a controller that performs a media scan processing for detecting the presence or absence of a defect in a sector in the recording region of the disk in track unit. When the controller performs the media scan processing on a first sector and a second sector arranged in the track, and a third sector arranged between the first sector and the second sector, the controller performs skip processing in which the controller scans the first sector and the second sector, and does not scan the third sector.
Optical disc apparatus
An optical disc apparatus includes: a controller configured to acquire information of an access result and access positions on an optical disc when an optical disc drive unit configured to optically access an optical disc optically accesses the optical disc; and a storage configured to store the information acquired by the controller.
WANDERING WRITE PROTECTION FOR SHINGLED MAGNETIC RECORDING STORAGE DEVICES
A method includes receiving a write request to write a current data block to a Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) storage device. In response, the current data block is written to a current physical block in an open zone of the SMR storage device. A corresponding copy of the current data block is written to a nonvolatile memory. A determination is made of whether a wandering write error occurred during the writing of the data to the open zone. In response to the wandering write error occurring, for each of the number of written physical blocks in the open zone that have the corresponding copy in the nonvolatile memory, the data in the physical block is validated using the corresponding copy. In response to validation, the data in the corresponding copy is written as corrected data for the physical block to a new zone in the SMR storage device.
DEFECT REGISTRATION METHOD
According to one embodiment, a defect registration method includes measuring, performing first extracting, and registering. The measuring is measuring, on a unit-area basis, performance of a storage area of a magnetic disk including a plurality of unit areas. The storage area includes a redundant area of a set capacity. The first extracting includes second extracting one or more unit areas in order of increasing the performance. The registering is registering the extracted unit areas of the set capacity as defect locations.
Minimizing reads for reallocated sectors
Systems and methods are disclosed for minimizing reads for reallocated sectors of a data storage medium. An apparatus may be configured to selectively skip over reallocated sectors in an LBA range without interrupting a read, via generating a skip mask or by beginning the read after the reallocated sector and reading the entire track up to the reallocated sector. When a number of sectors not read from the LBA range during the read operation is less than an amount of sectors that can be recovered based on an error correction capability, the data of the reallocated sector may be reconstructed using error correction data rather than by performing a read at the reallocated sector.
Storage control device, storage system and method of controlling a storage device
A storage control device configured to control a storage device including a plurality of groups each of which includes a plurality of storage regions, the storage control device includes a memory and a processor coupled to the memory and configured to store, into the memory, information associated with each of the plurality of groups and indicating whether an error region in which an error is detected is included in at least one of the plurality of storage regions of each of the plurality of groups, identify a first group including the error region from the plurality of groups based on the information associated with the plurality of groups, read data from a plurality of storage regions included in the identified first group, and identify the error region included in the first group based on the read data.
DISC DRIVE THROUGHPUT BALANCING
Implementations disclosed herein provide an apparatus including a storage media and a storage controller configured to divide physical storage space of the storage media into a plurality of media zones between an inner diameter (ID) and an outer diameter (OD) of the storage media, and write LBA sectors to the media zones in a direction from the ID to the OD and writing the data in the direction from the OD to the ID within each media zone.
