A product, according to one embodiment, includes: a tape spool having: a first flange, a second flange, and a circular hub sandwiched between the first and second flanges. The tape spool also includes a cylindrical compliance layer which encircles the hub. The compliance layer is configured to dampen radial stress exerted on the hub by a tape wound around the hub. A product, according to another embodiment, includes: a tape cartridge having: an outer housing, and a tape spool positioned within the outer housing. The tape spool further includes: a first flange, a circular hub coupled to the first flange, and a cylindrical compliance layer which encircles the hub. A magnetic tape is also wrapped around the compliance layer and the hub. Moreover, the compliance layer is configured to dampen radial stress exerted on inner wraps of the magnetic tape.
HUB COMPLIANCE LAYER FOR REDUCING MEDIA STRESS

A data storage cartridge according to one embodiment comprises a housing configured to house a data storage medium, a sensor coupled to the housing, and a microcontroller coupled to the sensor. The microcontroller is configured to wirelessly communicate information about the sensor. Other embodiments relate to a data storage cartridge comprising a housing configured to house a data storage medium, a cartridge memory coupled to the housing, the cartridge memory having a wireless communications interface, and a microcontroller in physical communication with the cartridge memory. The microcontroller is configured to wirelessly communicate information retrieved from the cartridge memory. Additional embodiments relate to a data storage cartridge comprising a mechanical write protect mechanism coupled to the housing of the data storage cartridge, an actuator coupled to the mechanical write protect mechanism for selectively changing a state of the mechanical write protect mechanism, and a microcontroller configured to control the actuator.

The reel hub has an inner peripheral surface and an outer peripheral surface, a housing unit capable of housing the leader pin being provided on the inner peripheral surface or the outer peripheral surface. The first flange is provided to one end portion of the reel hub. The second flange is provided to the other end portion of the reel hub and includes a slit portion through which the magnetic tape is capable of passing.

A magnetic recording medium with a tape shape includes a substrate that contains polyesters, an underlayer that is provided on the substrate, and a magnetic layer that is provided on the underlayer and contains a magnetic powder. The magnetic recording medium contains a lubricant. An average value of arithmetic average roughnesses Ra of a surface of the magnetic layer is 1.3 nm or less. In a case where an average value of peak half widths of a spacing increase region generated on an entrance side of a glass pseudo head which the magnetic recording medium enters when the magnetic recording medium is slid over the glass pseudo head is set as a spacing index SRL and an average value of peak half widths of a spacing increase region generated in the vicinity of an edge of the magnetic recording medium in a width direction when the magnetic recording medium is slid over the glass pseudo head is set as a spacing index SRT, the spacing index SRL is 35 ?m or less and the spacing index SRT is 68 ?m or less.

TAPE REEL, TAPE CARTRIDGE, AND APPARATUS FOR PRODUCING TAPE REEL
A tape reel according to an embodiment of the present technology includes: a first flange; a second flange; and a reel hub having a cylindrical shape. The reel hub includes a first end portion formed integrally with the first flange, a second end portion to which the second flange is bonded, and an outer peripheral surface on which a magnetic tape is wound. The outer peripheral surface of the reel hub has a first outer peripheral region and a second outer peripheral region. The first outer peripheral region expands in diameter from the first end portion toward the second end portion. The second outer peripheral region expands in diameter from the first outer peripheral region across the second end portion and forms a ridge line portion having a shape projecting radially outward of the hub portion on a boundary between the second outer peripheral region and the first outer peripheral region.
