POST-PROCESSING METHOD TO EXTEND THE FUNCTIONAL RANGE OF OPTICAL BACKSCATTER REFLECTOMETRY IN EXTREME ENVIRONMENTS
A system and method for determining an object characteristic from a timed sequence of measured characteristics wherein the object characteristic is determined based on a comparison of a current measured characteristic against a variable reference characteristic. The variable reference characteristic is selected by iterating through the timed sequenced and determining a separate quality metric for the current measured characteristic against each earlier measured characteristic and selecting the variable reference as a function of the determined quality metrics. In one embodiment, iteration continues only until an earlier measured characteristics is found with a quality metric that meets or exceeds a threshold value. In another embodiment, iteration continues through a plurality of earlier measured characteristic (perhaps all) and the variable reference is selected as the earlier measured characteristic with the highest quality metric. The measured characteristics may include OFDR measurements.
Phase delay extraction and compensation method in PGC phase demodulation technology
The disclosure discloses a phase delay extraction and compensation method in a PGC phase demodulation technology. The sinusoidal phase modulation interference signal is converted into a digital interference signal by an analog-to-digital converter after amplification and filtering, and the digital interference signal is subjected to orthogonal downmixing of first-order, second-order, and fourth-order harmonics simultaneously to obtain three pairs of orthogonal harmonic amplitude signals. The three pairs of orthogonal harmonic amplitude signals are used to extract phase delay, and the result is used to calculate the corresponding phase delay correction coefficients, and the phase delay correction coefficient are multiplied by the corresponding absolute harmonic amplitude signal equal to the sum of the absolute value of the orthogonal harmonic amplitude signals to obtain a new harmonic amplitude signal that is not affected by the phase delay, then the phase to be measured is obtained through the arc tangent operation.

A distance between the first and second reflectors is different for each of the optical fibre portions.
Topside Interrogation For Distributed Acoustic Sensing Of Subsea Wells
A distributed acoustic system (DAS) method and system. The system may comprise an interrogator and an umbilical line comprising a first fiber optic cable and a second fiber optic cable attached at one end to the interrogator. The DAS may further include a downhole fiber attached to the umbilical line at the end opposite the interrogator and a light source disposed in the interrogator that is configured to emit a plurality of coherent light frequencies into the umbilical line and the downhole fiber. The method may include generating interferometric signals of the plurality of frequencies of backscattered light that have been received by the photo detector assembly and processing the interferometric signals with an information handling system.
Method and Apparatus for Optical Sensing
An optical fiber distributed acoustic sensor system makes use of a specially designed optical fiber to improve overall sensitivity of the system by a factor in excess of 10. This is achieved by inserting into the fiber weak broadband reflectors periodically along the fiber. The reflectors reflect a small proportion of the light from the DAS incident thereon back along the fiber, typically in the region of 0.001% to 0.1%. To allow for temperate compensation to ensure that the same reflectivity is obtained if the temperature changes, the reflection bandwidth is relatively broadband. The reflectors are formed from a series of fiber Bragg gratings, each with a different center reflecting frequency, the reflecting frequencies and bandwidths of the gratings being selected to provide the broadband reflection. The reflectors are spaced at the desired spatial resolution of the optical fiber DAS.
OPTICAL INTERFERENCE RANGE SENSOR
A conversion unit converts a first electrical signal to a first distance value indicating a distance from an interferometer to a measurement target. An inclination value calculation unit calculates an inclination value based on the first distance value. A first distance value correction unit corrects the first distance value based on the inclination value. A second distance value correction unit calculates a second distance value indicating a distance from the optical interference range sensor to the measurement target based on the first distance value that has been corrected by the first distance value correction unit. If the number of times that the first electrical signal is detected is smaller than a second threshold, the first distance value correction unit corrects the first distance value based on an inclination value that precedes the inclination value associated with the first distance value in a storage unit.

METHODS AND APPARATUS FOR DETERMINING SHAPE PARAMETER(S) USING A SENSING FIBER HAVING A SINGLE CORE WITH MULTIPLE LIGHT PROPAGATING MODES
Example embodiments include an optical interrogation system with a sensing fiber having a single core, the single core having multiple light propagating modes. Interferometric apparatus probes the single core multimode sensing fiber over a range of predetermined wavelengths and detects measurement interferometric data associated with the multiple light propagating modes of the single core for each predetermined wavelength in the range. Data processing circuitry processes the measurement interferometric data associated with the multiple light propagating modes of the single core to determine one or more shape-sensing parameters of the sensing fiber from which the shape of the fiber in three dimensions can be determined.
