SAMPLE PREPARATION DEVICE

The present disclosure relates to a sample preparation device and a related method. The sample preparation device includes a sample preparation module having a holder configured to hold the sample container, and an actuator coupled to the holder. The actuator is configured to cause the holder to repeatedly change a position of the sample container a set number of times in order when the sample container is held by the holder. The sample preparation device also includes a staging module configured to hold the sample container for a set period of time. The staging module includes a rack that holds the sample container when the sample container is released from the holder. The set period of time is sufficient to allow the blood in the sample container to further clot.

AUTOMATED SAMPLE PROCESSING, FLUID DISTRIBUTION, AND SEDIMENTATION ASSAY

The disclosure describes methods and devices with which to process and analyze difficult chemical, biological, environmental samples including but not limited to those containing bulk solids or particulates. The disclosure includes a cartridge which contains a separation tube as well as one or more valves and cavities for receiving raw sample materials and for directing and containing various fluids or samples. The cartridge may contain a separation fluid or density medium of defined density, and structures which direct particulates toward defined regions of the cartridge. Embodiments can include a rotational device for rotating the cartridge at defined rotational rates for defined time intervals. Embodiments allowing multiple assays from a single sample are also disclosed. In some embodiments, this device is used for direct processing and chemical analysis of food, soil, blood, stool, motor oil, semen, and other samples of interest.

Analytical method

The present invention provides a method of analyzing a sample containing an analyte to be qualitatively and/or quantitatively determined, comprising a binding step and a washing step, wherein the binding step comprises: interacting the analyte with beads having a density m1; obtaining a structure of packed beads comprising quantifiable bead complexes having a density m2; and the washing step comprises: dispersing the packed beads in a liquid medium having a density d>m2 and m1; and separating the liquid medium and the beads comprising the quantifiable bead complexes.

Automated centrifuge loader

A processing unit for automated preparation of biological samples included in specimen tubes is described herein. The processing unit includes a removable sample preparation component configured to receive specimen tubes, read identifiers associated with the biological samples contained in the specimen tubes, mix reagents included in the specimen tubes, and transfer the specimen tubes to at least one of a centrifuge or a storage compartment. The processing unit further includes a centrifuge loader for automatic loading and unloading of the specimen tubes onto a centrifuge. The automated centrifuge loader includes a magnetic brake that can stop the centrifuge rotor at a precise position to facilitate loading and unloading of a specimen tube. The centrifuge includes a swing bucket designed to pivot around an axis and slide vertically to enable moving the bucket to a position in which the swing bucket can engage with the port where the specimen tube resides.
